Why do they find one random spot to lick and just keep licking it over and over? Not on themselves but on other things like pillows or couches, etc. I've seen numerous dogs do it. One of our dogs licked a hole in the carpet yesterday and made it larger overnight. Seriously? What the hell, dude? :(

dogs may lick skin for body salts, but I think it's also an expression of affection

Perhaps you dropped food earlier on that spot?

Most of the time its compulsive behavior but it can also be a sign of a medical condition. My dog licks nothing all the time. Like he's licking his nose or something. He just licks. He never licks people though. No*dog*kissse from him.

I don't think anything was dropped there....not for long enough to lick a hole in the carpet. And I just got home from work and my wife told me he chewed up a plastic lid (like a tupperware thing) while I was gone and he chewed up a couple of other things in the last few days. Totally out of character for him. He never does stuff like that.

Nothing that I know of but I am thinking about Rubys post above regarding a possible medical condition. He is an old dog.

I think Grace licks me as her way of "petting" me.

Wouldn't hurt to take him to the vet. Old dogs don't usually just suddenly take up bad habits.

We probably will. He's an old dog but in great shape and goes to the vet regularly. He part golden retriever ans part yellow lab but we call him our silver retriever because of how gray his face and some of his body is now. But for his age, he is still very active and runs and plays almost like he did 5 years ago. There doesn't seem to be anything different about him.

    Get him a Kong!

Fill it with peanut butter before you go to bed. He will be busy licking it for a couple hours.

that last picture looks kinda sick lol

we used to fill it with peanut butter and freeze it, that way it took longer for our dogs to clean it out / keep them busy

He has something similar but my wife just went and got him another toy that you can put treats in. He's been busy with the new toy for a while. He has toys all over the house though. But maybe he will get the message....the carpet is not a freaking toy, dude!

Can you put him in the garage over night / when you're gone? With a nice sheep wool pad to lay on? Idk how cold it is where you live…

Thing about dogs and cats is they sometimes know they're not supposed to do things but do them anyway when you're not looking. Hence the "ohhh crap she caught meeeee" look they get when you catch them climbing into your dresser drawers lol

I could but I won't. I just won't make him stay outside while I'm gone. Maybe it's sort of cheesy but it's his house too and it's very cold out. He just needs to knock that shit off.

Ok well you keep telling him to knock it off then. I'm sure that he will eventually stop.
