I bought Kindle edition of a novella penned by a resident local to me. I am
on Chapter 2. So far I have not come across any social issues, other
types of conflict, philosophical reflections, insight to characters,
intriguing plot line or a refreshing style of writing. So am I wasting
    my time reading it?

Are you enjoying it? If yes, then no. If no, then yes.
I wrote a novel which is published here on this site. Check it out. It's in the Writer's Forum.

Love your answer... if you enjoy it read on! If not...

I read a lot of Kindle books and find there is a wide variety of quality to be found there.

I don't think much of these new 'quick read' titles as they are just short stories, sold individually. I'd rather read something with a bit more depth.

I found that out early on. I bought a few short story collections and found stories in them which I had purchased separately! Mostly I buy long novels, though, like The World According To Garp, by John Irving; a fabulous book.
