Hi. I have a cat since January 2014. It was supposed to die, because a friend of mine rescued him from the street, when he was a little kitty. Since he was starving, we have always encouraged him to eat a lot, in order to gain weight and to be more and more healthy.
But now, after almost two years he became obese, especially after we had him castrated.
He eats, and eats. Restlessly. My mother feeds him as soon as he meows, asking for food.
    He sleeps not that often.
He is able to consume a package of 2 kg crunches in two weeks. This is not normal. I am scared...its hunger scares me...and I think it is bulimia...because he eats so fast and so frequently, that sometimes he vomits.
Not to mention how many times I change his litter.
please...help me. what should I do?

    Hello,

my landlady has a cat that is unhealthy fat. It looks like the michelin man. I think it is kind of animal cruelty to cram pets. Well, I'm not an expert, but I think the way to go is to reduce the food. Not at once, but slowly. A cat isn't working. So it doesn't need so much calories. I guess the hard part with this excercise is not to fill the cat's bowl if it is meowing.

    Regards

I am living at my parents temporarily. It's them who feed him so much. I can't prevent them from feeding him (unless I hide the crunches). As soon as he meows they give him lots of crunches, just to let him be quiet. If he lived in my house, I would give him much less crunches and only at established periods of the day.

Try feeding fresh mince instead. It will then be satisfied.

You'll have to hide the Cat food from your folks. Put out what he should have each day and no more. Get tough.

I am gonna do it. My parents are destroying my cat's health. Vomiting often is very dangerous for his body... they are just people who put lots of crunches on a bowl so the cat will stop meowing. So selfish.
    Thanks for the advice.

Would you believe that he prefers crunches and he neglects food like cooked fish and fresh mince?
in other words...he prefers the garbage and not high quality food

    Hello,

I would exchange dry feed for mince in no time, but I'm not a cat ;). Cats are foodies. Sometime if they get used to some sort of food it's hard to change that.

Of course...but he's obsessed with crunchies. A cat is supposed to eat more than one type of food

    Hello,

ages ago we had one that would only eat one brand of food. If we bought a different brand that little bastard looked at his filled bowl, looked at us and acted like he is starving. At first it looked like we could trick him by mixing in the other brand in his prefered food, but it was a lot of work and in the end the cat won.

I Mean, Is There Some Part Of That Simple Request They Don't Understand???????

    Cheers Glen.

    Hello,

your cats are indoor cats, aren't they (except for Arnold, who occasionally likes to take a ride ;)). The fat cat of my landlady could leave the house. But usually he prefers to stay inwards. If you push him out he starts yelling ;).

    Regards

    Hello,

a friend of mine installed cat doors recently. But his cat don't understand it. The cat usually stands in front of the door and wants someone to let him out. Then you shove it through the cat door. A few moments later it wants in again and it starts meowing in front of the door ;).

    Regards
    Gyro

unfortunately he eats any brand of crunchies, from the most expensive to the cheapest one.
His is a psychological hunger, because he eats so nervously and fast. And after he does, he sometimes vomits. He is the fattest cat I've ever had.
oh...since you seem to be informed about cats, is it normal that when we put crunchies in his bowl, he can't see them and finds them only by his smell, sniffing in the air? And yet the vet said he's not blind

This is normal. A cat's up close vision is not that good unless the object is moving, their distance vision is much better.. Cat food is usually made with a strong smell so they can find it easier.

    Hello,

to be honnest, I'm more a dog type person ;). For a long time I lived in a household with several cats, but that doesn't make me an expert. As for the food, I would try what other posters suggested. Reduce the overall amount of food and try smaller rations over the day.

That cats we had could sleep in a different room. As soon as you got the package with the food out of the cupboard and the crunchies rustled a bit they were at their bowls ;). Hm, you said your cat lived on the streets. Maybe the sniffing has something to do with the way he found the food there? Maybe he's checking the environment for predators? And what Tyrson said.

    Regards
    Gyro
