During the Allied bombing attack on Dresden from 13 to 15 February 1945, eight hundred bombers dropped over 2,700 tons of explosives and incendiaries and decimated the city. Over 25,000 people died. To all intents and purposes World War ll was over so why was it necessary to carry out the bombing or was it, just as the atomic bombs dropped on the two Japanese cities in August the same year, just a demonstration of might for the benefit of the USSR?
let's not forget that despite that the war in Europe lingered on another 3 months. Thats a long time for a war that is "over." So it is conceivable that the war would have lasted much longer had the industrial targets in Dresden not been destroyed. Horrible, horrible event and it's a tragedy so many civilians died but after 6 years of war I think Europe was willing to do whatever it took to shorten the war by 5 minutes. The atomic bombs may have been an attempt to posture in front of the soviets, but I don't think Dresden was. I don't know a lot about the war in Europe but i've never heard that either
So, did they bomb an innocent civilian target? I'm not sure I'm understanding. Thought Allied was good guys/anti-Axis...
WWII was a bit different than today. Aerial bombing of targets was quite inaccurate, and with industries being very close to civilian population centers, the deaths of innocent civilians when targeting industrial targets was inevitable.
I think the bombings were to demoralize the enemy. These days we're concerned with winning over 'hearts and minds', blah blah blah. Thus perma-war.
It's not that the City was bombed that was ever the dilemma it was how it was bombed, with fire but only to kill civilians. Buildings still remain today, black, not destroyed. I think Dresden was manufacturing cigarettes.
The world cannot leave Germany, China or Japan alone for too long or else they'd leapfrog the rest of the world in technology and engineering. The other super powers recognise this, thus cannot rid a country for those Super powers rely on them too much.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The major powers of the world can’t leave those countries alone because they have a history of rallying around charismatic leaders bent on world domination and conquest Also, The bombing of Dresden revealed a previously unknown phenomena called a firestorm
Ok, when in Japan's history have they ever done this more than once? Country is defined by civil war for most of its history. Ww2 was a departure from the norm
Yes im sure dropping 500 tonnes of incendiary explosives designed to burn at 2700F totally "revealed" a phenomenon. That totally would have been unexpected.
I'm sure when they bombed Hamburg and Tokyo with fire that was also an unexpected result too. Who'd have thunk it.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Not a fire but a firestorm: A fire of such great size (usually but not always, initiated by an atomic bomb) that it becomes literally self-sustained, spread by strong in-rushing winds from all sides. I’m sorry if I set off a firestorm of emotion ..lol..
My question was when did Japan attempt world domination more than once. Not defending their actions during WW2 they were clearly the bad guys. But to suggest Japan has a history of world conquest is just confusing
