James Cameron Talks Plans for Five ‘Avatar’ Films & More ‘Terminator’

Disney has finished absorbing most of the Star Wars franchise, and now appears ready to invest a cool billion dollars sequels for Avatar and the Terminator series. In the interview Cameron remarks on how much brighter scenes can be in a film, with it being quite possible to watch a movie where the car headlights can literally blind you for a few seconds. Your average TV produces maybe 150 nits or so, an HDR10 monitor produces at least 300-1,000 nits, while broad daylight is between 3,000 and 7,000 nits of brightness.

In the near future, most TVs and monitors should adopt the HDR10 standard as simply a good minimum. Although its not nearly enough to blind people with car headlights, what they add for home use is a vastly increased range of colors and the ability to make one corner of a screen significantly brighter than another, allowing for a broader range of grays as well. What Cameron may be shooting for is next generation lightfield technology, which can capture all the information in all the photons, taking photo-realism to the ultimate level. We'll have to wait and see, but this is the kind of technology Cameron specializes in, making 3D movies with ultrahigh fidelity.

Being able to capture every photon and render it in VR is a long term goal, and we'll have to wait and see what Cameron has in mind for the immediate future. Although its tempting to think this is just a waste of a billion dollars on cheesy Disney films, by adapting the technology to their production lines they are bringing down the costs dramatically, and this kind of technology has endless practical applications including medical ones, such as bringing eyesight to the blind. VR headsets are enabling legally blind people around the world to see the faces of their loved ones for the first time and the applications are endless.
