I'm pretty sure that 5 HTP is a precurser to seratonin. What would happen if it was ingested in large amounts?
Not too much. The human body is usually good at regulating serotonin levels within it. Most of the perceived effects are caused by having a deficiency of serotonin in the first place, so it may make you feel normal.
Why not manufacture serotonin from 5-HTP and save some trouble? I would love to hear how it's done. Anyways, I have been very interested in 5-HTP. Anyone who can do some enlightening in this forum would get some props from me. =p I think you could turn 5-HTP into serotonin with Aromatic L-amino decarboxylase, it would metabolize into serotonin + carbon dioxide.
serotonin is no use - unless you can inject it into each individual neuron. serotonin serves no psychoactive property when in the body - it cannot pass from the blood into the brain. 5-htp can, but it doesnt directly affect you - so you must ingest 5htp and it will be taken up by neurons and metabolised into serotonin - to be used by the cell that makes it. if you could somehow inject serotonin directly into the brain's fluid, then you could possibly give youreself a flood of neurochemicals for no price - but this could be impractical and life-threateningly intense. if it were the case however, it would be worth synthesising serotonin from 5htp.
The book I am reading said that 5 HTP increases weight loss. Is this over the counter? A pill? does anyone know. I am looking for more information on what it is?
It would be similar to taking an SSRi... one of those antidepressant medications. It helps makes trippy drugs trippier though. It's a great substance.
Bought some at GNC. I don't think it is worth the price, it's like 18 dollars for 60 capsules. It really doesn't do anything for me. I just use it as a placebo to calm my nerves, as gay as that sounds, but it works, sometimes.
