Great stuff. I often wonder why some people try to belittle this era so much. History Channel did a really crass and shallow documentary recently on the hippie movement.

Like SH said, this stuff almost brings tears to your eyes.

I saw that BUSHIT documentary on the History Channel. It was a bogus attempt to bury the hippie movement by focusing on every detail that would turn ppl off.

I can't believe that Peter Coyote, one of the original Mime Troopers, and a famous actor and voice-over specialist lent his talents to that bogus script.

Some of the things they had him say I KNOW he knows were lies, yet he went ahead and said them anyway so he could get his paycheck.

If I ever run into him (and I may), I'm gonna give him a big piece of my mind on that. Too bad he wasn't at this event with other Mime Troopers. Perhaps he's just "above" that sort of thing now, being a big Hollywood actor and all...:$

    Anyways, back on topic...

One group I neglected to mention, was Moby Grape who reunited just for this concert! Too bad they suck so bad, imo... ;)

They sounded like that group of kids in a garage who never quite get their music together enough to hit the big time. They were so loud all I could hear at the front of the stage was distortion. But I'm sure their fans would've loved it! They certainly had that psychedelic sound down.

I want to commend the organization that put the 40th Anniversary event together, 2b1records. They did an excellent job organizing, promoting and producting the event. Everything ran very smoothly, with few problems.

It's amazing to think this was a FREE concert! Few events are free anymore. I hear that Boots (the organizer) spent $100,000 out of his own pocket to do this, and fortunately he got back $80,000 for a net loss of $20,000, which he sloughed off saying he would've spent more than that on a new car, and that it was well worth it! :)

That's the spirit we've been missing all these years. Those that HAVE share with those that don't!

[IMG] Marvellous 40th anniversary photos Skip!.Thanks.
Ray Manzarek,Paul Kantner,Wavy Gravy,Bruce Barthol & Country Joe et al, still doing it after so many years.

I don't know why I'm the second person to refer specifically to 'The Chamber Brothers'.They were outstanding in 1967 & almost forgotten until now.

If anyone would like to see 'em back in 1968 on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' please click on the You Tube below:

Great photos! I too went to the 40th Anniversary show at Speedway Meadow. The minute I stepped onto the N Judah Metro I knew it was gonna be a good day. So many people around me were also obviously going and the train was packed with people in tie-dye and other colorful clothing, which really put me in a good mood. I don't remember smiling so much at a concert. People were friendlier than usual and it was so cool to wander around watching the individual dancers, checking out the booths, listening to the music and speeches, and enjoying the sunny, warm day. The only "bad vibe" moment I had was when I wanted to buy some incense from a woman selling it. I asked how much; she said whatever you think. So I started taking out some change, thinking 50 cents. She suggested a dollar so I took out a buck but she opened the incense and was about to give me ONE stick. I said forget it and started to walk away but then she changed her mind and gave me the whole packet for my dollar. It's great to walk in the park on Sundays when it's closed to traffic -- I walked all the way back towards the Haight and enjoyed myself with the hypnotic flow of walkers and bicyclists coming and going on the way. I'd love to see one of these every year. One thing irks me though -- the writers, reviewers, etc. who go on about how many old folks were there, not mentioning that there were also plenty of younger people too -- infants to people even older than me. Why're so many younger people so anti-hippie? Older ones too -- read something in an editorial about how pathetic it was to see all those old hippies at the festival.

^Dude, I was there too! I have just been recently getting into the Chambers Brothers, and it was a great thing to watch when Lester Chambers went up there. I dunno if my generation is "anti-hippie"; they try and distance themselves from the LABEL "hippie", but for the most part they embrace the ideas from the 60's and 70's--at least, thats how the kids at my school are.
And on another note, there was so much weed there--it felt so good to be able to toke up in public without having to hide it! The vibe I got from the entire crowd was so great.
I was gonna buy a cool poster to remember the experience, but they were way too expensive. I just had enough money for some food, some beer and some bud.

I hope they do a similar gathering soon (the anniversary of woodstock is coming up in '09!)

Great photos Skip-Sorry I missed it-Thats my home and it would have been a good time to go to that and visit my little sister down in Santa Cruz-maybe next year-

Well how did Marty sound? Did he do Miracles?-See he's got a touch of gray goin on there lol-Man' glad to see everyone still around after so long. Did you see Grace or does she still sing with Marty and Paul?-A couple years ago they had a memorial tribute there for Chet Helms-great man!-Did they mention him at all and did Big Brother play?-I know they are still together with a new girl singer but I've never heard her.

I remember being so high on Owsley at Winterland and listening to the Chambers Bros do "Time"-kinda scary at times!-Well-gotta make the next one for sure-thanks for the stroll down memory lane-

I looked it up and David Frieberg was with the Airplane last year at Golden Gate Park for Chet Helms Memorial. I can't find a recent photo of him but it looks like him' kinda like David Crosby. He's a great musician first with Quicksilver then the Airplane on bass and keyboards and vocals-he sings high notes.

Marty sounded GREAT as always! No they didn't do any Starship songs, only Airplane songs!!! I ain't complaining! :)

Yes, Chet Helms was mentioned, as was everyone who was around for the original Summer of Love including Jimi, Jerry, Janis and others! No one from Big Brother showed up as far as I know. Nor was anyone from the Dead there... :( Perhaps they're on tour.

So THAT's where I recognized him from! I last saw Quicksilver in 1971. They were great!

Yes David only sang with several groups, he didn't play an instrument.

Thanks Wyldwynd! :) That explains his presence there, son of Dino Valenti of Quicksilver Messenger Service. Seems like there were several Quicksilver people there, but as far as I know they didn't perform as a group. :(

Now can anyone tell me who this is? He played some of the best guitar licks the entire day. He was with Country Joe's band, but I don't think he's one of them. So who is he? He was lookin' my way for this excellent solo - probably cause I was dancin' away, really diggin' it! :)

I don't know. Could it be a much older Berry Melton from the Fish minus the curley hair from 40 years ago?-I don't really know Skip but was Dino Valenti there or is he still alive? Ya know I was one of those Quicksiver purists who hated it when he joined Quicksilver. I liked Greg Duncans voice much better on Pride Of Man but he did write by far the most important and popular song of the day and done beautifully by Jesse Colin Young-Get Together!-That song was perfect in so many ways and at a time when America was coming apart at the seams from the war.

I don't suppose Jesse was there or anyone did that song did they?-And Blue Cheer played at the Chet Helms Memorial last year were they there?-You would have definetly known if they played-your ears would still be ringing-lol-
I love that park and miss the smell of the Eucalyptus trees-very theraputic and my ma used to boil the leaves in water to make the house smell good and kill any fleas. Time to make run down there and bring a bunch back up here' it dosen't grow up here in Wa.--Glad ya had a good trip back in time-whens the next one?

They were talking about the 50th anniversary saying they'd have to put in some wheelchair ramps and have life-support on standby for many of us! ;)

Yes, Leigh Stephens from Blue Cheer did play with Greg Douglass from Steve Miller Band. Sorry I didn't get pix... :(

Actually that could be Greg Douglass in the above photo! :)

And no, the Fish and Country Joe don't even talk to each other, so they wouldn't have played together.

Steve Miller would have sounded great!-Especially doin his older stuff-remember the Boz Scaggs days?-hot band! No sign of Grace Slick?
