I agree with BSR. Giving these people national press saturation is one of the main driving factors behind this trend of school shootings. Of course there are always suicidals, but giving their final act, and sometimes their message, airtime, is reward for their actions. Letting others know what they 'went through' must be a driving force.

I also think that there are too many guns, too easily accessible.

I think you mean in the world. So what? There are many populous nations that don't have this problem. And no nation that has a similar problem even proportionately to their population.

So...instead of rationalizing it, I'd look for the peculiarities that makes this collective psychosis possible. And they are out there.

There are many things about the U.S. which are unlike any other first world country.

And it does have an anti-social/isolationist/individualistic/anti-intellectual TRADITION.

Great post. I agree it's not the guns per se.

Actually, one question to ask is why are guns produced at such an exagerated rate precisely here.

Why is there such a market for it?

Though I would say, curbing the production of it can't hurt.

I just heard on the news (WLS talk radio) that days before he STOPPED taking his medication - it was discussed in the police interview after the incident... can anyone guess what this med was? Something for depression huh? Maybe the correlation between these shooters being on depression meds isn't coincidence???? MAYBE THATS THE PROBLEM?????

I'm so sick of it, SO SICK OF IT... pop a pill in a kids mouth and expect him to feel so great... but don't call him on drugs, don't call his mind FUCKED as it is from THOSE drugs... read all the problems associated with drug addiction, now put that into a young mind, now put that into consistent "prescription" for years upon years... SICKENING!!!!!!!!

    Watch the movie serenity....

    SICK OF IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

QUIT PUTTING PILLS INTO YOUR KIDS LET THEM DEAL WITH THEIR PROBLEMS AND GROW STRONGER SO THEY HELP OTHERS INSTEAD OF GOING INSANE!!!!!

    grrrrrrr...

Yes I'm actually angry, I'm sick of it.... plain ole sick of it....

I don't understand. Guns are so cool and fun. Crazy people on medication have a right to play with guns. Everyone deserves to have a gun. Babies should have guns. Animals should have guns. Guns should grow on trees. There is no other way of life that would be satisfying or worthwhile without guns.

Ive been saying for awhile now that this era of antidepressant use is going to be looked at as some kind of epidemic and huge mistake in history.

There are also a bunch of cultural factors that cause this kind of desperation in people, and the drugs only temporarily numb them at best. But for most people it seems they throw them further out of balance.

But hey, pfizer sure likes the profits.

The US has the highest rates of mental illness of western industrialized nations. There are unique elements of our society that people in other countries can't understand and think things like banning guns will make everyone hold hands and jump around in circles.

To me the biggest explicit problem is making already unstable, desperate, isolated, suffering people manic or further unstable with the drugs. Further than that we really need a ground up shift of values and overall social structure. But that will probably never happen since any kind of progression in those ways is looked down on by all the rich businessmen and politicians.

I hadn't made that co-relation, cranky. Maybe I did, but didn't give it its proper importance.

    Thanks for an insightful post.
