From memory after bacteria the largest biomasses on the planet are krill, mould then ants, then other insects By mass their are way more ants than humans and probably bees. 37 million bees probably probably isnt anything, there are likely trillions
yeah but there are other insects used for pollination . wasps for instance , minute fig wasps are abundant. fig wasps are responsible for pollinating almost 1,000 species of figs. figs are unusual fruits as the flowers are actually inside the immature fruit. fig wasps enter through a tiny pore to mate, lay eggs, and pollinate the tiny flowers. however because the wasp in general isnt covered in tiny hairs. its not as efficient as bees for pollination.. unlike the bees the wasp is an efficient predator of harmful insects.. win some lose some.
other insects aren't even going to come close to what bees do. I was right anyway, as usual, up to 50 trillion or so world wide Stuff on the greenpeace site is the usual guessing game crap All that really needs to be done is ban the same class of pesticides in North America that the EU has, no biggie
That seems not all that needs to be done as bees are still dying in the EU too. They are not 100% sure why. It is a reasonable assumption to look into pesticides but it seems not that reasonable to conclude already that that's the only thing that needs to be done and then it's ok again. It is also speculated it could be the mobile phone networks for instance (hey I'm not sure at all, but it seems worthy to look into to me)
Not having food might be high on your list... Of course by then it would be too late. Oh well, carry on.
Syrphid flies are considered the second most important group of pollinators after wild bees.. http://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/pollinators/pollinator-of-the-month/index.shtml
