    300: Rise of an Empire

This is a sequel to the 2007 movie 300, about the Greek's holding off the Persian invasion by Xerxes at Thermopylae. It is R-rated and based on a grafic novel by Frank Miller with all the slashing, heads lobbed off, gushing blood and a few tit shots for the het boys. The rest of the visual experience is the unreal gorgeous male bods, wearing almost nothing into battle so you can see every flexing, sweaty muscle.

It actually takes place in the same time-frame as the first movie, with Gerard Butler appearing in archival footage referencing the Spartan King Leonidas.

The story starts with Spartan Queen Gorgo (Lena Headey) rallying the troops with the deeds of her dead husband and where fate was started by General Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton) of Athens when he killed the Persian King Darius at Marathon and Darius' son Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) would seek revenge.

There is also a backstory to bring a new character, Artemisia (Eva Green) a Greek girl who was rescued by Darius to become the most ruthless of the Persian Naval Commanders.

Spartans for all their military prowess did not align themselves with other Greek City-States so Leonidas refused General Themistocles request for naval ships to fight the Persians at sea. After Thermopylae, Themistocles again asks Queen Gorgo for an alliance but she too is reluctant.

Meanwhile Xerxes transforms himself into the formidable god that he considered himself in the first movie and wages his war with his very independent Commander Artemisia.

Lots of sword & sandal action in the grafic novel format with slow motion and stop action shots with unreal amounts of blood spatter as if drawn on the page and lifted to the screen. BTW, I saw this movie in 3-D IMAX - not that I am particularly into that at double the cost but because I was going to meet someone afterward at the Aventura Mall. I'm sure it will be just as gorily impressive in 2-D.

There is even an unlikely ruf-sex quickie between General Themistocles and Artemisia.

Then more unlikely naval battles with ships propelled by oarsmen in seas that are artistically ruf. Just remember this is a grafic novel put into a motion picture and enjoy the visuals. It got mixed reviews from critics, but it wasn't a movie made for them was it? I liked the first movie and I liked this one as well, as most young males will. Also guys, this movie is rated R so don't forget your younger brothers, nephews and such who really want to see it. Do your good deed for the day.

I saw the movie today and I loved it :2thumbsup:

I wasn't expecting much because it was expecting a sequel (although because it ran concurrent to the original battle) - it really wasn't

I saw this movie and thought it was good.

I thought the characters were awesome and kept a good story line.

In my opinion, it wasn't to the same standards as 300 but it was worth watching.

Queen Gorgo looks like Nancy Kerrigan.
