I wouldn't hit anybody, and I would shout out before I started waving anything at anybody.
To be fair, it has not happened, and 'touch wood' it won't.
I don't see myself as an aggressive person...
I'd probably try to get the hell out of the house and call the police.
There isn't anything in my house worth dying/being hurt for.
I get it if there are others in the house, but I'd try to get them out, too.

    56olddog: In the US?
    Me: In your case, yes.

( Ivory62: Location: Adelaide. I think I asked that question to him)

Doesn't the U.S have 'three strikes and you're out'?

Your warning an intruder could get you seriously hurt or killed -- "waving" anything without "waving" it in the act of using it is likely to do the same. As you say, hopefully, such will never happen at all.

I do not consider myself an aggressive person either, but there are those that depend on me to provide for them and to protect them -- they've no one else.

Understanding your statement regarding possessions not worth dying or being hurt for -- that's a question those thinking of breaking and entering should ask themselves.

    I agree.

Trying to "talk down" a person that has broken into your home is definitely naive and almost retarded. Since I'm an unarmed woman, I would try to hide (or leave) and call the law...which makes me realize I need to obtain some "protection".

Yeah, as much as I detest even thinking about it, if it were between me and/or those I love against anyone else...I'd do my damnest to put them down however I could. period.

I think when a person breaks into your home, or committs the kind of atrocious act that happened in Newtown, they know they may not come out of that alive.

"In the US?" was a rhetorical question on my part. What I meant was that here in the US, something as "unimportant" as a conviction for "breaking and entering", may not result on ANY jail time.

Yeah. Those laws vary some from state to state -- even so, it seems very little deterrent. Ima have to agree with RetiredHippie when he says:
    :D

Well, I was only going through the possibilities: Defend, Attack, Run.
I don't believe in every single circumstance you need to attack.
It seems in three (possibly four) peoples eyes that is the only way.
    That's fair enough.

Ok, fair enough. So if the intruder is 'dropped' not killed - you have a free possibly angry intruder out on the streets?

If you're going to argue, do it properly.

I SAID I WOULD HIT THEM NON LETHALLY. I NEVER EVER SAID I WOULD STRIKE THEIR HEAD.

The collarbone will incapacitate without lethality. So will the knee or the groin.

In my house without an invitation? Then they get hit. It's kind of that simple, and any decent SD or MA instructor, whether it's from karate, TKD, kung (gung) fu, kenpo, boxing, judo, ju jutsu, ju jitsu, BJJ, Systema, krav maga, savate, wrestling, escrima, silat, muay thai or WHATEVER will tell you the same.

Like I said...I never said 'him'. I didn't take you to task about it, did I?
As long as I didn't say 'kill' does it really matter?
Ok, you've non-lethally struck him somewhere and now he is on the floor incapacitated. Happy?

I would try to leave. I think even if I had a gun I would try to escape unnoticed first. In most cases of breaking and entering the intruder probably has no real intent to harm the homeowner (although you never know so in the event that you have no way to escape I do think it is best to shoot first and ask questions later) and material possessions aren't really important enough for me to get into a potential shooting match over.

I would not mind having a gun in the house but I would be hesitant to use it if I could get out of the house safely.

I would shoot before I would resort to hiding, however. I wouldn't be able to stand that sitting duck feeling.

In my view, if someone has broken into my house, it is THEY who have attacked -- it is by their choice that they suffer the consequences of their actions.

What many seem so unable or unwilling to understand is that the US has laws that protect the rights of criminals (as it should be to an extent) while the victims suffer the consequences of having been victimized. Many times, those who have committed serious crimes, are released on bail, remaining free for months while awaiting trial, only to commit more crimes.

I've no real concern about an intruder being angry. LOL There's certainly no reason they should be "out on the streets" to commit more crimes.
