I just realised it is only in a week or so. I'm going to bail out this year but "definitely" next year! I hope to meet you then.

I'll hold out for next year as well. Don't imagine there will be very many people showing up, and besides, a Rainbow Gathering should be the opposite of social distancing. Hopefully next summer we'll all be immune somehow.

The most experience I had with Rainbow Gatherings was the huge amount of hype surrounding the year 2000 edition in the downtown Denver area (where I was, not where it met). Maybe it was stationed in Colorado that year? Don't know, but I sure heard of it... I was more interested in raves at the time though.

EDIT: no conclusive answer available from Google for my query. I don't know where the Rainbow Gathering was in 2000, but I definitely knew of it. I remember thinking about security issues... I was such a tweeker! SMH

Montana was my first Rainbow Gathering in America. Had just been to the world rainbow gathering in Australia and the americans convinced me to go to Montana. It blew my mind! Next year is it!

So tikoo, be sure to tell us how it went and post some pics and vids when you get back. Unless you can do it while you're there.

The Nez Perce teach a social dance for two tribes meeting . Two circles , the two tribes , one within the other go round in opposite directions facing each other . The step is a slow shuffle - feet together , step , feet together , step ... to the rhythm of the drum . Every one meets everyone many times .

I once saw a 100+ mountain ravens do a similar circle dance in the sky . Yes , I thought they were two tribes meeting .

I understand the gathering is significantly smaller this year--only a few hundred people, which is probably good, considering the virus. The unofficial Welcome Home website says:"Things are obviously different this year. While there are no leaders in Rainbow, there can't really be a decision, but it appears that the common consensus is to not gather this July to respect the rights if people in Idaho to not be accidentally infected." But then it says in much larger, bolder letters:Ignore All Rumors of Cancellation. Obviously some mixed messaging. So I hope you all stay safe and wear your masks!

No. They're worn to protect others from the droplets emitted by the wearer.

Against viruses? I find that hard to believe.
