Well debates tonight. This thread has all been foreplay so far. Now we can hear as much juicy policy as they can put in 4 minutes or whatever they get.

Either Libertarians support replacing every DC bureaucrat with AI or they are talking out their ass. Libertarians have made it fucking illegal to vote for Mickey Mouse, and I see no reason to vote for Donald Duck or anyone else who votes for higher taxes and big government. Its nothing personal, just business. Its only about 2.5 million people, mostly Libertarian Mormons, who believe in smaller government. The fed has the money to do it right, then we can work on replacing our state governments and doing away with most of these clowns.

IBM's Watson won on Jeopardy, and maybe he can run for president. Microsoft can run both the government and the Xbox.

Re: the "first night's debate score:
Julian Castro may not be around for final jeopardy
    Jay Inslee +
    Tim Ryan +

I didn't care for the way the debate was moderated, and it seemed like the moderators showed favoritism

They never will either because those same corporations are buying our candidates. It's not possible for either party to take on Wall Street bankers, brokers and lobbyists and be funded by them at the same time. It's a truly nice little operation they've got going and who wants to spoil it?

At some point someone is going to have to have a debate with all 25-30 candidates in it on the same stage -- what would have happened tonight if one of the debate participants, for example, called Joe Biden a pimpstick or something?

In any case, Senator Warren appeared to do what she needed to do. I am not sure why she is supposed to be indistinguishable from Senator Sanders; it is a completely different ideology with some but not all similar proposals. Senator Booker also did what he needed; it was rather impressive. Congresswoman Gabbard was angelic; Mayor de Blasio was vacuous and the only one who really impressed me as being doomed. Trump yeah yeah yeah -- everyone knows who the incumbent is; what are you for? I would think based on those in the office of all parties like Lindsay, La Guardia, Bloomberg, Koch, Giuliani, and de Blasio too, actually, that anybody who has managed to acquire and execute the job of Mayor of NYC since it took its present form in 1896 is ipso facto qualified for the office of President and some have said it is a step down in some ways, but what was he doing? I am pretty sure he knows better . . .

I know the right wingers would hate the idea but I think to improve educational standards it’s not just funding but organisation.

All fifty states and most major cities/school districts…set their own curriculum frameworks, priorities, funding, standards, tests and scheduling. The US Department of Education guides, recommends, and sets national standards, but has no statutory control or power over state or local authority. Therefore, quality and standards vary between states and districts, with some being outstanding, some ghastly

To me the US needs to set up a proper Department of Education that produces one national curriculum and can share out funding appropriately and check on standards. This would also enable it to drive down costs on such things as textbooks (and books in general) along with other equipment.

I would also cut private schools off from public funding and cut off any tax exemption they might get, and make home schooling a lot more supervised.

Honestly, I think all the blue team are playing it wrong right now by not poking Trump.

They don't have enough time to discuss policy. But if you make Trump mad enough you'll get hours and hours of free news cycles which is critical right now.

    I agree
I am opposed to home schooling. It's just another way for rightwingers to indoctrinate young kids.

  17. Policy is exactly what they need to discuss, instead they're mired in wedge issues, some of which are older than me. None of them is talking about how to defeat Trump because every one of them is certain they will be able to bring it directly to him by defeating him in the next election. Even Hickenlooper believes this.

We're dealing with a group of people who are certain they are absolutely right and just and cannot possibly make a mistake. (But if it does happen, it's probably someone else's fault)

  18. There's more to it than that. Some kids benefit from home schooling regardless of the religious or political leanings of their parents. I was a judge at a science fair and several of the entries were from students of home schooling groups. Which is more like parent-initiated private schooling. They want to educate their children in a controlled, culturally-centric manner. Seems like something the American charter would encourage.

Really though, where are US schools ranked these days? From what I can see they're only slightly less shitty than when I attended.

I agree. The prevailing idea seems to be that Americans are hungry for new government programs. Not me. I'm hungry for competent, statesmanlike leadership. Make America Normal Again!
