You know what I saw? A black woman looking at a stand for a shoe store. These stands have only one shoe of a pair for display. The other one is still in a box somewhere. Well, what I thought was really touching was that she was soooo careful not to be … I'm not sure how to put it. She didn't want to look like she might steal one of the shoes. No one from the store was even around the display. They were all inside with the thing outside their store; it's a Vans shoe store. She was with her husband.

She was a really well aged and unassuming black lady. And I couldn't believe the contortions she was putting herself through to try and accommodate what I would say are society's subconscious thoughts.

What I'm saying is, there exists a sort of double-consciousness for these poor people. They live their lives all the while knowing or even just suspecting people have some kind of distrust for them. I don't know... I just found it a really prominent example of double-consciousness or the existence of a standard where we wouldn't think twice if it were an over-the-hill Caucasian individual; depending on if they were unkempt or not in reality...

Anyway. I actually did a short essay about double-consciousness, so maybe that is why it stands out to me. That and we were talking about white privilege.
