How to Watch the First 2020 Democratic Debates—And What to Expect

Yep folks, it's that time again. Time for the questions to be answered with long dances and the mud to be hurled.

The democrats came up with a better solution than the republicans last time around. Instead of dividing the huge group by some sort of ranking, they mixed them into two semi-random groups. But I see this as problematic as well.

They are arranged like this:

Night One (Wednesday)

• New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio
• Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN)
• Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI)
• Gov. Jay Inslee (D-WA)
• Former HUD Sec. Julian Castro (D-FL)
• Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH)
• Former Rep. John Delaney (D-MD)

Thursday Night

• Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT)
• Former Vice President Joe Biden (D-DE)
• South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg
• Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA)
• Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)
• Entrepreneur Andrew Yang
• Author Marianne Williamson
• Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper
• Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO)
• Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA)

So Thursday is easy to figure out, everybody attack Biden, the top dog. But what about Wednesday? Will they all go after Warren? Or will they go after Biden in abstention and flog an imaginary dog?

I would like to have seen Harris and Warren on the same stage. The sad thing for Warren is that she seems like the queen of the kid's table anyway. I doubt she's fooled by having it on the first night.


In a nod to an old friend, I'm going to try to play Cheap Shots in the chat room both nights. The rules are simple; each time someone in the debates (plural) scores a cheap shot, we take a shot (or toke). Anyone can play and anyone can call a cheap shot. It is handled democratically after that!

 

Sad that it's not a debate at all but a question and answer format .
We'll see the interviewers pontificate essentially framing the answers for the candidates and then judge how well their answers compare with the geniuses asking the questions.

 

They'll probably ask Bernie about reparations to try and make him seem racist.

 

So far Bernie's on top!

I voted for Buttigeig because I like the Butt part of his name.

 

It's the lesser group of candidates tonight. So far they're all just patting their ideas on the back.

 

It IS fun to say. Butt-edge-edge

 

Yeah the plan to split them up to avoid the kids table didnt work well

 

Bernie is only on top at this point, because its hard to go any lower.

 

Gabbard shows well.

 

I always like what she has to say. She's very thoughtful and measured

 

Yea, that too. Really though, I just want to rub her down with tanning lotion. After she flogs me for reading an article about a republican.

 

Oh.

 

I like Tulsi Gabbard.

 

I think this John Delaney is the one to watch.

That and the look Julian Castro gave Beto O'Rourke when he started speaking Spanish were the 2 highlights for me

 

That was epic. I half expected him to accuse Beto of "Cultural Appropriation".

"How DARE you speak MY language white boy"

I had too many shots, so I missed the end. Oh well.
