Covid: Thanksgiving the cause of a spike in US infections?

Prior to Thanksgiving, infection rates were already increasing across the US and this upward trend has clearly continued.

However, looking at the combined data for the whole of the US, there's no clear indication that infection rates accelerated following the Thanksgiving holiday.

California man 'kills fellow Covid patient with oxygen tank

A 37-year-old man who allegedly used an oxygen tank to beat to death a fellow Covid patient in his California hospital bed last week has been charged with murder and hate crime.

Jesse Martinez became upset when the 82-year-old man sharing his hospital room started praying, according to Los Angeles police.

Mr Martinez then allegedly grabbed an oxygen tank and bludgeoned the elderly patient.

The victim died the following day.

The pair, who police say did not know each other, were receiving treatment for coronavirus in a two-person room in Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster in southern California.

"The suspect became upset when the victim started to pray. He then struck the victim with an oxygen tank," a statement from Los Angeles police said.

"The suspect, 37-year-old Jesse Martinez, was arrested and charged with murder, a hate crime enhancement and elder abuse," a statement read.

Emergency nurse tests positive for COVID-19 eight days after vaccination

An emergency nurse in the United States has tested positive for COVID-19 just eight days after getting the vaccine.

A Californian ER nurse who works at two hospitals in San Diego, identified as Matthew on social media, received the Pfizer vaccine on December 18, according to an Instagram post.

“Got my COVID vaccine!” he wrote.

“The 15 minutes afterwards sitting around with a bunch of others while healthcare workers asked us how we felt made me think of an opium den. I’ll report back if I start to grow a third arm.”

However, Matthew started feeling sick a week later on Christmas Eve with chills, muscle aches and fatigue after working a shift in one of the hospital’s COVID-19 units, he told ABC 10 News.

On December 26, he tested positive for coronavirus, The Daily Mail reported.

Chinese Government says Wuhan outbreak 10 times larger than reported

It has long been suspected that China may have fudged the numbers when it comes to the true number of coronavirus infections the country endured.

But there now appears to be proof that during a critical phase of the pandemic up to 10 times more people caught COVID-19 than official figures stated. Extraordinarily, this revelation has come from the Chinese government itself.

An infectious diseases expert has said authorities failed to give a “true appreciation of the infection and its size”.

From late January, images of Wuhan being locked down circulated globally, a precursor of what was to come in any countries.

According to the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission, the city where coronavirus was first recorded has seen a total of 50,354 cases in its more than 11 million residents.

However, newly released research by the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) paints a very different picture.

It tested 34,000 people within Wuhan, the surrounding Hubei province and a number of other cities outside the area, to see if they had antibodies to COVID-19 – a sign that they would have contracted the virus.

“The investigation found that the positive rate of new coronavirus antibodies in the community population in Wuhan was 4.43 per cent,” the report stated.

They would suggest almost 500,000 people in Wuhan contracted COVID-19, 10 times more than the 50,000 officially recorded
