    Wednesday 21st October

91 covid patients in ICU in the entire state of Massachusetts

    https://www.mass.gov/doc/covid-19-dashboard-october-21-2020/download

There are 97 hospitals in Massachusetts, so an average of less than 1 per hospital

Total covid deaths with underlying conditions stands at 98.2%

with 16,814 active cases, that puts the percentage requiring ICU at 0.54%

The Oxford one is the modified Chimp cold virus one anyway

Uses a chimpanzee virus to teach the human body how to produce antibodies that attack the spike protein on Sars-CoV-2

That is, still requires a healthy human body to produce enough antibodies to fight off Covid i.e will still be fairly useless for the elderly

You do realize it was half that number in the ICU just two months ago.

I noticed you didn't mention the number of cases which has spiked from just under 100 per day two months ago, to between 700- 800
per day over the past week. - interesting.

The number of older people getting coronavirus in Europe is rising again. That's really bad news

(CNN)Europe is deep in the second wave of the coronavirus epidemic, and a particularly worrying trend is beginning to emerge: More older people are becoming infected.

Over the summer months, the continent saw infection clusters popping up mostly among younger people who were venturing out into bars, restaurants and other public spaces. While that wasn't ideal, it meant the death rate stayed relatively low, since younger people are statistically less vulnerable to the virus and most avoid getting seriously ill.

South Korea flu jab: Investigation into 13 deaths after vaccine

South Korean authorities have sought to reassure people as the number who have died after being vaccinated against seasonal influenza rose to 13.

The doctor leading an inquiry into the deaths has said he does not believe the vaccine and fatalities are connected.

But trust in the vaccine programme has been dented, and the Korean Medical Association has called for it to be halted until its safety is assured.

So far around 13 million people in South Korea have received the flu jab.

The country launched a free flu vaccination programme for 19 million eligible people last month as the government tries to avoid a mass flu outbreak while it tackles Covid-19

A 17-year-old boy who died two days after receiving a flu shot was the first to be noted
    by officials.

Coronavirus Australia live: 'Cough up': Spat between states explodes

An explosive showdown between the nation's leaders is expected at today's National Cabinet meeting after huge demands from NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian.

Yesterday she fired up at Queensland asking the Sunshine State to “cough up” its outstanding debt for accommodating the returned overseas travellers in hotel quarantine. She says Queensland owes NSW more than $35 million for “welcoming back their citizens” and she wants them to pay up.

NSW has been accommodating up to 2500 international travellers every week in Sydney quarantine hotels – many of them from other states.

Trump’s campaign made stops nationwide. Coronavirus cases surged in his wake in at least five places.

As President Donald Trump jetted across the country holding campaign rallies during the past two months, he didn’t just defy state orders and federal health guidelines. He left a trail of coronavirus outbreaks in his wake.

The president has participated in nearly three dozen rallies since mid-August, all but two at airport hangars. A USA TODAY analysis shows COVID-19 cases grew at a faster rate than before after at least five of those rallies in the following counties: Blue Earth, Minnesota; Lackawanna, Pennsylvania; Marathon, Wisconsin; Dauphin, Pennsylvania; and Beltrami, Minnesota.

Coronavirus Australia live: Chaos erupts on Melbourne streets

Protesters have run riot in Melbourne this afternoon, attacking police and causing mayhem.

Police had to corner the violent crowd in the city’s CBD after they ran amok for three hours.

The anti-lockdown protesters threw bottles and punches at police and let off flares.

A massive effort is now underway to arrest and process offenders one by one.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has revealed Australia’s state and territories – except for WA – have agreed “in principle” to get borders open by Christmas.

Mr Morrison said today’s National Cabinet meeting had been a successful one with Australia’s leaders agreeing to hopefully have all hard borders gone by the end of the year.

Western Australia has a hard border in place while Melburnians are banned from entering every state and territory.

Mr Morrison said West Australian Premier Mark McGowan still had some reservations about reopening his state but the PM was hopeful the entire country could be reopen by late December.

“I look forward to the continuing opening up,” the PM said.

It's a good thing we've turned the corner in this pandemic ……………..

U.S. records second-highest single-day rise in COVID-19 infections since pandemic began

With coronavirus infections steadily increasing in the U.S., the number of new COVID-19 cases reported on Thursday was the second highest since the onset of the pandemic in the country, falling closely behind a peak during mid July, according to Reuters.

Both cases and deaths have been showcasing rising rates over the past two weeks, culminating in 76,195 new cases reported on Thursday.

This figure nears the country's single-day record of 77,299 cases on July 16.

When i read we hit over 900 cases today in Massachusetts I knew the numbers nationwide wouldn't be good but this current wave is nothing short of a tsunami.
There's no stopping this freight train we're easily headed for over 100,000 cases a day.

America hits highest daily number of coronavirus cases since pandemic began

America on Friday hit its highest daily number of coronavirus cases since the pandemic began, recording at least 82,600 new infections and surpassing the previous record set during the summertime surge of cases across the Sun Belt.

he current surge is considerably more widespread than the waves from last summer and spring. The unprecedented geographic spread of the current surge makes it more dangerous, with experts warning it could lead to dire shortages of medical staff and supplies. Already, hospitals are reporting shortfalls of basic drugs needed to treat covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

And it’s not simply a matter of increased testing identifying more cases. Covid-19

And it’s not simply a matter of increased testing identifying more cases. Covid-19 hospitalizations increased in 38 states over the past week. The number of deaths nationally has crested above 1,000 in recent days.

The last time the country hit a new daily record for coronavirus cases — 76,533 on July 17 — just four states accounted for more than 40,000 of those cases: Arizona, California, Florida and Texas, according to a Washington Post analysis.

    From the same article

"Equally alarming, Murray said, is that no one knows how high this wave will grow before peaking."

So far the one saving grace is there have only been sporadic accounts of people who have gotten COVID-19 twice,

One confirmed case here in the United states was of a 25 year old man who doctors confirmed was entirely free of the virus, only to have become re-infected.
The second time through the patient described the symptoms as much worse.

No, the one saving grace, the main saving grace is that the mortality rate has plummeted

No one seems to want to mention it though, call me a cynic, but it's almost as if the media thinks people will stop clicking their articles if the headlines include "mortality rate drops 90% since April"

Once again you seem to be hooked on this mortality kick, rather than the suffering and possible long-term (if not lifetime) consequences associated with the virus

This is my country, one infected person travels on a train, that's enough for a panic in the media

A person travelled on Melbourne’s train network while infectious, prompting an urgent coronavirus warning from health officials.

The Department of Health announced a positive case travelled on Melbourne’s Craigieburn railway line on October 21 and 22, passing through Glenroy, North Melbourne and Yarraville between 6-6:45am.

How long did you smoke cigarettes for? How many decades, how many packs per day?

I used to smoke. Maybe 2 years of my life... maybe. I know I had a habit, but I was young and more into it for appearances. When I was 31, I picked up smoking having quit for the previous decade or so and promptly kicked the habit in favor of vaping; which was then very very new (2011). I got an electronic cigarette device through some website offering a free trial, kept it by mistake (you were supposed to send it back?!), and was charged about $100 which my parents paid for me because I had very little money at the time. I bet I paid them back though... AND, I never went back/kicked smoking bud at the same time.

VG, In the U.S. right now, they are reporting a massive increase in CoViD-19 cases. That's not to say it's killing any more than it did last week... But from what I understand we have a whole bunch of new cases. I will wash my hands more, wear gloves more, and of course I need to wash my mask.

I do hope it goes away. I really don't mind the lockdowns - everything's basically the same for me except there's more structure which brings me a certain comfort to be perfectly honest. Because people need discipline, structure, formality, etc. But I get the notion that someone is dying for my resolve when I think about this... It makes me feel guilty, and rightfully so. So I hope that it turns for the better.

But as we've all said, it's not going away on its own. And there's still no vaccine being circulated/introduced/inoculated*.

While we wait, do you think they could implement some UBI? ;)
