Embarrassing backflip over MyGov hack



The government has had to retreat on its sensational claim the MyGov website crash was due to a cyber attack, eventually admitting the freeze was caused by increased visitors.

Minister for Government Services Stuart Robert said during a press conference this afternoon the website suffered a “distributed denial of service attack” from an unknown party shutting off access for thousands of desperate Australians seeking income relief.

“MyGov has not been offline. It simply suffered from a distributed denial of service attack this morning and currently it’s processing 55,000 concurrent users which means the 55,000 and first user will not be able to access it,” he told reporters.
But then the minister was forced to backtrack on this claim in Question Time a little later saying the increased traffic triggered internal alarms making it appear as though there was an attack.

Mr Robert said there was no specific evidence of a hack causing the breakdown.

The embarrassing backflip will do little to ease the anxieties of Australians suddenly plunged into unemployment as a result of the coronavirus grinding the economy to a halt.

At least 23 people have died in one of Bogotá's largest jails after what the authorities are calling a mass breakout attempt amid rising tensions over coronavirus.

Colombia's Justice Minister Margarita Cabello said 83 inmates were injured during a riot at La Modelo prison.

Inmates at prisons across the country held protests on Sunday against overcrowding and poor health services during the coronavirus outbreak.

The justice ministry is investigating.
