When the president of the United States gave his annual state of the union, he missed another golden opportunity, in my opinion at least. He should have at least mentioned mental illness. To my knowledge, the words "mental" and "mentally ill" were never brought up.

He could have address the stigma many of them face. And he could have promised more funding for research, something sorely needed now.

He seems a fairly decent kind of a man (even to his critics). So why didn't he?

I watched most of it becuase he is the coolest pres you guys have ever had

Why didnt he mention mental illness, becuase no one is interested.

I dont say that to be mean spirited, just that until someone comes up with actual cures for imaginary diseases, any change in policy is just shifting people to different places

he did mention them, in the context of the gun thing, and also the healthcare context. someone wasn't paying attention at those points me thinks.

Sorry I am so late in responding. But I just want to say one thing to this, if I understand you post correctly. Mental illnesses are not just "imaginary" diseases. How do I know? Because they have very effective medicines for them.

My father was bipolar. And with newly discovered antidepressants, and atypical antipsychotics, he was able to live a near-normal life.

Actually, medicines for depression and schizophrenia have been around since the 1950's. Why then so many people still think they are just imaginary disorders, subjective and found only in people's minds, continues to amaze me.

I agree that there is a need for more awareness on the topic of mental illness. Just yesterday in fact I was posting in a gun control thread saying that the term mental illness is very broad and shouldn't be used in gun control without some recognition of the notion that not all mentally ill people should be blacklisted in terms of who may purchase weapons.

To answer though, I think the reason he didn't bring it up is because his speeches are usually around one hour, and he probably didn't have time.

For mental illness help, research Iodine deficiency and your Thyroid Gland. You would be surprised how the lack of one nutrient can effect the mental/homeostatic stability of someone.
