occasionally, i will seek out new music, or at least music that is new to me - despite the year it was released. however, i tend to listen to the same stuff over and over....but it's such a huge collection that i can change it up pretty often. anyway...i have been on a kick of listening to albums from my teenage years, and realized that there are a bunch of albums from 1997 that i absolutely love! here are a few of them: the lonesome crowded west - modest mouse https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lQ4e9qLOTI this is a pretty obvious one for most fans of indie rock. modest mouse is an amazing band and i think a lot of fans would consider this their best album..maybe? perfect from now on - built to spill https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qacaykelROU this is my personal favorite band, and this album is considered by some to be their "magnum opus." i don't think i would say this is their best album, but it is damn good. i especially like the song I Would Hurt a Fly (at 6:03 in the video)
dude ranch - blink 182 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56W12SbI-hI such an angsty and emo album from my youth. i fuckin love this one though. i know all the words and it gives off the perfect vibe for slamming some beers with friends (something i never actually do anymore haha). i'm not necessarily a huge fan of blink 182, but THIS album rips. brighten the corners - pavement https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MxfZBuhoHQ just like with built to spill, i never listened to these guys in the 90s when they were popular. i didn't discover them til the 2000s and internet radio. some of pavement's songs i can't dig, but a lot of them are really cool. from this album i like Embassy Row, Blue Hawaiian, and Starlings of the Slipstream best.
nimrod - green day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uP_osLcFnC8 here's one from my youth! i was listening to this the other day and The Grouch made me laugh. i used to listen to this over half my life ago when i was like 13 or 14. it's about a young man getting old - "i was a young boy that had big plans, and now i'm just another shitty old man." pushing the salmonella envelope - jimmie's chicken shack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q63bvOJ59wo&list=PLft2dLsFnOVxYnkH3nsC1s8vkG55TaC6v this is another one of my favorite albums of all time. probably the least well known of all the albums i mentioned, so give it a listen. this band is definitely in my top ten favorite bands. i invite you to mention other albums from 1997 that you particularly enjoy. or feel free to mention another Year in Music that you find especially appealing, and list some albums from that year that you love.
Radiohead - OK Computer http://youtu.be/5GMbEdKk5vM Airbag 00:00 Paranoid Android 4:45 Subterranean Homesick Alien 11:08 Exit Music (For A Film) 15:35 Let Down 20:00 Karma Police 24:59 Fitter Happier 29:21 Electioneering 31:18 Climbing Up The Walls 35:09 No Surprises 39:54 Lucky 43:43 The Tourist 48:03 This is my favorite album from the 90's... When I initially heard it I didn't really know what to make of it. I had heard The Bends from Radiohead a few years earlier and I enjoyed that but it seemed like pretty straightforward alternative rock, very accessible and easy to listen to. This was just like being thrown into a completely different experience, like rock music was completely falling apart at the seams but still the melodies were amazing and some of the song structures were unlike anything I had ever heard. Being fairly young I don't think I really knew how to process it at the time. When I came back to it a few years later, I absolutely understood it on a whole different level. I know one music critic has called it "The first album of the 21st century" and that's a good analysis. It is an album that is fairly prescient about the technological future and it has a seamless mix of euphoria ,fear and everything in between going into this unknown. The first side of the album in particular is flawless, I find the second side eases up slightly but this album changed music. Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole http://youtu.be/imp-U9mrjM0 1. "Block Rockin' Beats" Tom Rowlands, Ed Simons, Jesse Weaver 5:14 2. "Dig Your Own Hole" 5:27 3. "Elektrobank" Rowlands, Simons, Keith Murray 8:18 4. "Piku" 4:54 5. "Setting Sun" (featuring Noel Gallagher) Rowlands, Simons, Noel Gallagher 5:29 6. "It Doesn't Matter" Rowlands, Simons, Paul Conley, John Emelin, Tom Flye, Rusty Ford, Kim King 6:14 7. "Don't Stop the Rock" Rowlands, Simons, Tony Butler 4:50 8. "Get Up on It Like This" Rowlands, Simons, Quincy Jones 2:47 9. "Lost in the K-Hole" 3:52 10. "Where Do I Begin" (featuring Beth Orton) 6:56 11. "The Private Psychedelic Reel" Rowlands, Simons, Jonathan Donahue 9:22 This album is a really intense, kaleidoscopic, psychedelic, funky electronic odyssey that is done in a way that only a few electronic acts can do. I am surprised it was commercially successful, it's pretty unyielding and unrelenting. I find it hypnotic and really tripped out for most part where at some parts I cannot help but to move my body to it.
you know, GB, all these years you have been mentioning the chemical brothers and i have never given them a listen until now. pretty decent for electronic music, which isn't really my thing. have you ever listened to Aphex Twin? they've got an album from 1997: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GmBKu37Dmo&list=PL9dThdR6I6dP659ZNj3CmYIuV3opM39VA and how could i forget one of my favorite bands - 311?! their album Transistor came out in '97: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRITtyQLemo and i am always noticing songs with the same name, ever since your thread on that topic. most recent ones i saw were the song Down by 311 and Down by Blink-182
Yes I've listened to Aphex Twin, I like him for the most part. He has some extremely beautiful songs and then some songs that make me think he is seriously F'd in the head This is a pretty funny meme. Third Eye Blind - Self Titled http://youtu.be/smilXwl07HI 1. Losing a Whole Year (0:00) 2. Narcolepsy (3:21) 3. Semi-Charmed Life (7:09) 4. Jumper (11:38) 5. Graduate (16:10) 6. How's It Going to Be (19:20) 7. Thanks a Lot (23:34) 8. Burning Man (28:31) 9. Good for You (31:31) 10. London (35:23) 11. I Want You (38:30) 12. The Background (42:59) 13. Motorcycle Drive By (47:55) 14. God of Wine (52:18) Pretty much a nostalgia post, I don't even remember anything from the 2nd half of this record but it had several hits including "Semi Charmed Life", "Jumper", "How's it going to be", "Graduate". Quality Pop Rock that has a definite 90's sound.
oh damn, i love that third eye blind CD. i could sing along with the whole thing. the 2nd half has some good ones!
i like third eye blind too i remember buying that cd and still have it ...played it tons back then...
AFI - Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes http://youtu.be/WWPoobvzgEk 1. Keeping Out Of Direct Sunlight (an introduction) (0:00) 2. Three Reasons (0:58) 3. A Single Second (2:32) 4. pH Low (4:44) 5. Let It Be Broke (6:26) 6. Third Season (8:32) 7. Lower Your Head And Take It In The Body (11:22) 8. Coin Return (13:08) 9. The New Patron Saints And Angels (15:42) 10. Three Seconds Notice (18:00) 11. Salt For Your Wounds (19:35) 12. Today's Lesson (22:00) 13. The Devil Loves You (24:15) 14. Triple Zero (25:46) This album is from when AFI was still underground. If you have only ever heard their mainstream songs, this stuff might be kind of shocking. This is their heaviest record and pretty much straight ahead Hardcore Punk. This is not my favorite album from them but I find it a very interesting release, I would say it is a transitional album. They shed a juvenile silliness from their prior records, yet it still has a very raw feeling and not as refined as their subsequent releases. The whole album takes place in the span of a half hour with 14 tracks, so it's fast and intense. Probably the most out of place posting on this forum but I was really into AFI at one point.
1997 was a good year. I really started to become aware of music, outside of the music I heard growing up, around 1996 - 1997. Pretty much every band/song/album in this thread brings up some intense nostalgia for me.
i was never that into punk music, but a lot of my friends and kids in my town were. there was not a lot to do in my super tiny town, except go to punk shows at the taco shop. a lot of those kids were fans of AFI. or was it Operation Ivy? ....maybe both
Well pork and g, you have taken my favorite, but I also love: My favorite album by björk is 1997's Homegenic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYxKWvbQ-Pc&list=PL48A5B03D5459E5C1 and wu tang clan's forever https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKAiYj4XuT4
Operation Ivy had become Rancid by the mid-90's. I mean Op Ivy still remained fairly iconic, like I do recall a lot of kids with patches of them on their jackets or backpacks but Rancid also was fairly well known by then. Another quality Punk Album from that year: http://youtu.be/y_zYU_xBPTQ 00:00 1. Fight Till You Die 02:23 2. Date With Destiny 05:18 3. Get A Life 08:14 4. Society 11:39 5. Final Day 14:51 6. Broken 17:37 7. Running Out Of Time 19:59 8. You'll Never Make It 22:34 9. Every Time 26:11 10. Nowhere Fast 29:08 11. What If I 32:04 12. Go Away 33:54 13. Did You Really 36:46 14. Bro Hymn Tribute 45:01 15. Hidden Track
one thing that was NOT so great for music that year...biggie died. but then this was released: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJF4AKWm1w4 some gems off this album: Somebody's got to die Nigga's bleed Notorious Thugs (with bone thugz) Ten Crack Commandments Sky's the limit
Prodigy - Fat of the Land http://youtu.be/iIMVbL1rq5c?list=PLjIuADMrDKIY5yTkJkK3mi_dqZjzTMfcA This was the other Electronic album of the year that had widespread appeal. If the Chemical Brothers were like The Beatles in the sense of pushing the limits of electronic music and making some very mind expanding heady music, The Prodigy were The Rolling Stones with a dirty, raw, bad boy feel to their music. This album had some popular songs including: Smack My Bitch Up - Which has a fascinating music video that was very controversial at the time. Breathe Firestarter The whole album is really quality and it's interesting because it sounds like an acceptance by The Prodigy of their mainstream appeal, something they were not originally so comfortable with. IIRC one of the main members was frustrated that they were helping popularize rave music and the generations in the rave scene were going by quick and they were already veterans of the scene by this time and expanding out to festivals. Their previous album had made some societal statements, such as a "Fuck Em and Their Law" track which was opposing a bill passed in the UK that essentially attempted to make rave music illegal This album was more just a raw and raucous album, with some pretty kick ass tunes. Edit: Since the album wouldn't embed as it's a tracklist format, I'll include the Smack My Bitch Video. http://youtu.be/2DPF_pWIy3w
Shit, thats coming up to 20 years old that album, its a masterpiece, my fav from the 90s A guilty pleasure, and I may be laughed at by some, but 1997 was also: My fav Offspring album, not too commercial, a bit silly, but some catchy tunes
The 90's were fricking awesome for music! So much new stuff and crossovers/fusion of styles that actually were groovy and worthy to build further upon. Of course taste remains subjective and i find the far majority of 'alternative rock' and most punk from this decade utter garbage. Drum 'n bass, big beat, trip hop, electronic dance, house etc etc together with stoner rock and black metal is why i still find this decade rules. Ridicilously happy i spend my teen years and developed my music taste in these years.
The Verve - Urban Hymns http://youtu.be/rubcX0fq9hs "Bitter Sweet Symphony" (Jagger/Richards/Ashcroft) – 5:58 "Sonnet" – 4:21 "The Rolling People" (The Verve) – 7:01 "The Drugs Don't Work" – 5:05 "Catching the Butterfly" (The Verve) – 6:26 "Neon Wilderness" (Nick McCabe, The Verve) – 2:37 "Space and Time" – 5:36 "Weeping Willow" – 4:49 "Lucky Man" – 4:53 "One Day" – 5:03 "This Time" – 3:50 "Velvet Morning" – 4:57 "Come On" (The Verve) – 15:15 A quality album which features one of my favorite 90's songs in "Bittersweet Symphony" and also "The Drugs Don't work". Other standouts for me are "Sonnet" and "The Rolling People".
