A 14 year old Muslim boy living in the Dallas/Irving area of Texas made an electronic clock for his science class and took it to school to show his science teacher and classmates. The teacher immediately assumed that since the boy was a Muslim, the thing must have had to be a bomb. So he called the school office and they called the cops. The cops arrested the 14 year old 9th grader and evacuated the school. After determining what happened, they released the boy. President Obama was informed about the matter and has invited the Muslim boy to the White House to encourage good math and science skills in American schools. The incident shows that racism and bigotry still exists in many parts of America, and more so in the South. The Muslim boy has said that he told the teacher what he had made was a clock. The teacher nevertheless assumed that the boy had done something nefarious, because of his Muslim faith.

I saw the thing on the news, it was a timer inside a suitcase

It did look sketchy, maybe over the top, but Im not surprised at the reaction

Think of those first few seconds the teacher sees it, what would you do?

Now we need to ban clocks... and science projects... Well, only if the kids skin is a little darker than normal. [/sarcasm]

How many times has an American boy taken a science project to class in the last 50 years? Kids used to put together all sorts of HEATHKIT electronic projects 50 years ago! This kid took it to the teacher and told the teacher that it was an electronic clock.

Had it been a bomb, everyone would be like oooooo it's the teachers fault, the teacher didn't react on time.
It really didn't look like a regular clock.
The kid will get over it.

Maybe it is not so much bigotry and racism, but erring on the side of caution.....something hurts....then everything becomes suspicious and suspect....human nature...pavlov's dog kind of thing.

If the teacher that took the clock from him had actually thought it was a bomb, she would have hurried it outside of the school building; right?

She didn't think it was a bomb. She kept it.

So in her case, she was just being a you know what.....then....but in some cases.....it is erring on the side of caution, I think...although perhaps not the one the thread is about.

and I would not have touched the thing had I been suspisious at all...i would have hurried kids and me out and then called someone to check things out....if I really felt threatened.

I can see where his project looked a bit suspicious ... the briefcase mainly. I've built electronics myself and thought to myself that I would surely be questioned and possibly arrested were I to attempt to bring it through an airport. But until the day that silicon becomes an explosive ... it's not a bomb. They ought to be able to use their human reasoning capabilities though, given the context. They knew and expected him to bring in his project, so they should have known that obviously this was that kid's project.

Before calling the police, the principal should have asked the science teacher if he could verify that it was nothing more than a clock. Sticking with the suspension now makes that whole school system look like a bunch of fools. I hope the kid transfers to a better school, where they want students to learn and do as much as they can and not just be mindless robots who are exactly alike.

Obama invites the clock kid to the White House. Meanwhile ignoring all the kids who've been suspended, expelled, and handcuffed for wearing American flag t-shirts, playing with foam Nerf guns, drawing pictures of weapons, or biting a pop tart to form the shape of Idaho (oh wait, a gun). Why can't those poor kids get White House visits too?
