14 students, 1 teacher dead after shooting at elementary school

Fourteen students and a teacher are dead after a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, according to Gov. Greg Abbott.

The 18-year-old suspect, a student at Uvalde High School, is also dead, he said.

"He shot and killed horrifically and incomprehensibly 14 students and killed a teacher," Abbott said during an unrelated press briefing.

The suspect also allegedly shot his grandmother before entering the school and again opening fire, Abbott said. He did not say anything further about her condition.

Abbott said the shooter had a handgun and also possibly a rifle.

UVALDE, Texas (AP) — An 18-year-old gunman opened fire Tuesday at a Texas elementary school, killing at least 19 children as he went from classroom to classroom, officials said, in the latest gruesome moment for a country scarred by a string of massacres. The attacker was killed by law enforcement.

The death toll also included two adults, authorities said. Gov. Greg Abbott said one of the two was a teacher.

The assault at Robb Elementary School in the heavily Latino town of Uvalde was the deadliest shooting at a U.S. grade school since a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, almost a decade ago.

I can respect the fact that these children lost their lives...

I can not respect the easy access to guns, and the politics that allowed for that...

 

Before Tuesday, there had been at least 39 shootings in our schools, colleges and universities in 2022, resulting in at least 10 deaths and 51 injuries. This happens nowhere else on the planet, and is America's collective karma. Time after time, we collectively choose our precious thanatotic gun fetish over the lives of our own children. We blame the NRA and the firearms manufacturers, but we buy 20 million of their guns a year, driving their profits up from $19.1 billion in 2008 to $63.5 billion in 2020, a 232% increase. We have the highest per capita gun ownership in the world. We blame the politicians, but we choose to reelect the same ones over 90% of the time. We have shot more Americans to death since 1968 than in all of America's wars combined. Getting shot is now the leading cause of death for our children, because time after time we collectively choose our delusive rootin'-tootin' sixgun-shootin' wild-wild west fantasies over the lives of our own children. This isn't an act of god or some random vagary of fate which we're powerless in the face of; this is our reality because we have collectively chosen to make it so.
I'm sick to death of impotent hand-wringing. Either collectively exhibit the courage to choose change, or honestly embrace the suck, but stop with the passive bleating of thoughts & prayers. It's demeaning.

 

We do Candy. We respect it with our outrage.

This is what we have to deal with in America. The gun laws in the UK make much more sense.

 

I am praying for change.
In the UK it is mostly knife crime.

Here's what we know so far about Salvador Ramos

Ramos had been severely bullied as a child, He had a speech impediment, and was often the subject of homophobic slurs.

Ramos and another friend would occasionally drive around his neighborhood at night to shoot random people with a BB gun

Ramos became increasingly isolated from his immediate family and moved in with his grandmother.

On his 18th birthday, he legally purchased two AR-15 rifles and 375 rounds worth $4,000

Ramos purchased the guns on his 18th birthday due to Texas Gun Law Changes

Ramos Posted Gun Photos Before the shooting on Instagram which has since deleted his account.

The photos included a receipt for the purchase of a weapon costing $1,870 from a gun manufacturer and online retailer. Total cost $2,024 including taxes

Ramos was angry he did not graduate from High School

Ramos got into an argument with his grandmother over graduation and shot her, she was heard screaming, 'He shot me! He shot me!'

Ramos's 66-year-old grandmother was admitted to a hospital in San Antonio in critical condition

Ramos fled the scene in his pickup truck wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with two rifles and ammo

Ramos crashed near a ditch outside Robb Elementary School, got out, and headed for the school, where law enforcement officers tried, but failed, to stop him

At 11:30am local time Ramos burst into the school and opened fire.

Ramos entered several classrooms and started shooting his firearm.

Ramos was engaged by Law enforcement and died during the exchange of gunfire, but not before wounding two officers.

Question: Did law enforcement make the same mistake they did at Virginis Tech, and at Parkland by waiting until backup arrived before entering the school and engaging the suspect? We remember the cowardice of Parkland Officer Scot Peterson, I hope this wasn't the case.
