I've never had an issue with being barefoot in airports, and I use them far more frequently than I'd like... The only time there was an issue was in Dempasar, Bali, Indonesia. At the first boarding gate security checkpoint, the airport police told me that I had to wear shoes. "No problem," said I and donned my zorries. Literally 5 steps later, the next policeman told me to remove my zorries for the security check. "No problem," said I, and removed them, placing them in my bag for the remainder of the trip. :p

New places on my latest trip:

    • The grounds of the Imperial Palace, Tokyo, Japan (Really neat crushed gravel all over the place)
    • Suvarnabhumi Airport (Bangkok)
    • Paragon Mall in Bangkok (High-end; Maserati dealership on the 3rd floor)
    • Siam Niramit theatre
    • Riding on the back of an elephant
    • Erawan Falls National Park, Kanchanaburi
    • Nakon Nayok National Park
    • Park Plaza Hotel, Bangkok (The staff there were golden; very accommodating and polite and very interested to talk to the the "baabaabobo Falong" who didn't wear shoes.) ;)

From my house (who knows how long I'd been barefoot there!) to the airport parking lot, into the terminal, through security, and out to the concourse. I finally had to put on flip-flops to get on the plane.

    Interesting, StraightToes

We flew through Denver just last year and were never explicitly told that shoes were required. I suppose it just depends on who's on duty at the time...

Okay, I originally posted this reply on my own thread (titled "Bummer at Target"), but thought it had merit for this thread as well. The background is that the day before I had tried to go into a Target department store barefoot and was told footwear is required.

After my experience at Target, I had an interesting experience with Fidelity Investments. I had an appointment to rollover an old 401(k). I was trying to decide if this appointment qualified as one that demanded presenting the appropriate appearance (I'm not militant about doing everything barefoot and believe there is a time and a place for "appropriate attire" (visits to Target not being one of those). Anyhow, I said screw it, I'm comfy in what I've got on, it's my money, and if they have issues, there are other places to go.

I walked into the Fidelity Center in a polo shirt, shorts, and bare feet. No one said a word. By contrast, the women were in blouses, skirts, and heels, and the men were in navy blue suits, ties, and dress shoes. I had to wait for my appointment and was soon surrounded by others waiting for their appointments. For the most part, the others were pretty dressed-up, and I couldn't help but think how sad that was. Finally the rep came out to meet me. There was no mention of my attire. I could tell when I sat down in his office that he was a bit uncomfortable, but small-talk and business talk soon put him at ease. Not to brag, but I speak fluent finance, management, and technology, so I was never at a loss for words. By the end I'd say we were almost "chummy."

As we walked out, we exchanged pleasantries, shook hands, and I never once saw him, or anyone else I dealt with at the site, look down at my feet, much less make a comment. So I guess bare feet are acceptable for conducting business moving sums of money, but not for pushing a shopping cart. As they say, "Go figure"!

I fly BF all the time. I've BF'd the Mall of America, all 3 floors and parking garage. I BF'd the Capitol building, Air and Space museum, Lincoln Memorial, Arlington Cemetary, Roosevelt Memorial, Museum of Natural History, and Mt. Vernon in Wash. D.C. I thought for sure I would get hassled at Mt. Vernon because everyone was being barked at to not touch anything. The only comment I got was that I was the only patron they've seen that wouldn't damage the old flooring.

Pizza Hut. The one near my home isn't a full-service restaurant but one of those small stores where you can order only pickup or delivery. I always call in my order ahead of time and pick it up later. The staff can see me walking from the parking lot and into the place barefoot, and they're OK with it. :) Never had a problem.

Interesting. When I was in DC last year, I attempted to enter the museums and the Capitol barefoot, but each and every time, they insisted that I wear my zorries. Too bad, too, as those marble floors would have felt great...

When I went, it was late October and was with my son's 5th grade class. It rained like crazy the entire time we were there. I think that made a difference. A lot of crazy kids around during miserable conditions.

And yes, the marble floors felt really NICE!
