The truth is usually some where in the middle... Marijuana and tobacco are usually used quite differently. The quantity of pot used daily by the usual daily pot smoker doesn't compare to the quantity of tobacco smoked by a chain smoker so comparing weed to tobacco is a bit like comparing apples to oranges. I have absolutely no doubt that there are health risks with regular marijuana use. There are also health risks with excessive sugar consumption. Shall we ban it? I hear that if you pass out and fall face first in a large bowl of chicken soup you can drown. Shall we ban it as well? Pens and paper have been used to write dangerous prose... lets get rid of them. Without cars there would be no car accidents... so lets ban them. Sexual intercourse has been known to result in disease and high risk pregnancies- let's outlaw that! People need unembellished facts and common sense as well as the freedom to make their own decisions about matters. Marijuana is certainly not perfectly safe but let's decide whether or not to use it based on truth and not skewed propaganda and scare tactics. Hell- government information leads people to support illegal wars and murder... shall we ban the government? That is food for real thought.
i can't think of how many times i've said that very same thing. but people being bound and determined to refuse that there's any possible negative to their favorite herb is downright ridiculous. who cares? bad AIR can kill you. fuck, do what you want.
Do I drink a lot of beer? No, not really. I used to drink a lot, but I've cut way back. Now I only drink on the weekends, so usually only one or two nights per week. There are some weeks I don't even drink at all.
Its not that we refuse there are negative side effects, it's that everything the media says about it is intended to demonize the plant at all costs. Even if it doesnt make sense intuitively. For example I smoked cigs from 15-20 and my lungs were completely fucked. Coughing all the time, couldn't run, and always woke up with aching lungs. So then I quit that and starting smoking weed a year or so later, a habit I have kept up for 4+ solid years now. My lungs have never felt healthier, I don't have a cough, and I can run long distances no problem which I couldnt even do as a child. Overall my physical health, mental health, outlook on life, and overall demeanor has been improved significantly by smoking cannabis. So when some dumbasses who probably never got stoned in their lives execute some study then start claiming that this remarkably non toxic herb is more harmful to a persons respiratory function than 5 cigs that are just drenched in god knows how many chemicals, it seems completely ridiculous to us stoners. And if it were true, how does one explain my own experiences with smoking the two plants, and how come there are no cases of cancer or emphysema from strictly smoking cannabis?
anyone stupid enough to see this as demonizing already thought it was evil anyway. anyone with half a brick of sense wouldn't see it that way. we've all been so inundated with with how everything can kill you that this is just one tiny little thing that ONLY the stoners are worried about. don't take it personally. it's not like you're trying to convert the whole world to pot smoking. even among non-smokers, the legalization process is making headway. a study like this, when we have cigarettes and alcohol readily available, KNOWING WHAT BOTH CAN DO, isn't going to change that.
and BTW, that's a positive bit of news IN THE STUDY! but everyone was so up in arms about a TEENSY negative sound that they decided that the only thing they wanted to pay attention to was what suited their personal attachment to the drug. you can't ignore the bad and accept the good. everything has positive and negative effects.
I see your points mama, but the fact is stoners are defensive about weed because most of us have found it more helpful than not and constantly hear so many lies coming from the media and government. If you dont have a vested interest in a particular issue, chances are you will feel more impartial about it. With that said I'm aware that I'm biased in my views, although I am also willing to openly talk about potential negative aspects of smoking. The "other" views coming from the media are polarized from mine, completely biased in the opposite direction. One of my main conflicts with corporate scientists defining my reality is that I know my views are more based on the truths shown from unadulterated science and 5,000 years of human history. So yes, I think this study is bullshit and reject it as being anything close to the truth. Personally, I'm not even convinced that smoking cannabis (high quality through glass pipes and bongs) is bad for a persons lungs. The lungs are designed to filter the air we breathe, and while combustion produces tar and carcinogens like CO, the anticancerous and bronchodilator properties of cannabinoids act against those. Nicotine is a bronchoconstrictor that sets the stage for development of cancer cells. Not to mention the majority of tests for tar and other byproducts of combustion usually include stems and leaves which contain more chlorophyll and less active cannabinoids. Buds contain less plant material, chlorophyll, and more active components.
Funny that the government puts out propaganda against drug use, while at the same time they encouraged it for years. Just look at Tim Leary, who was working for the CIA and openly admitted it. Of course the government has to PRETEND they're against people using drugs because if they don't it might blow their cover and maybe even expose the fact that THEY are the ones who ship the majority of hard drugs (cocaine in particular) into this country. One of the things that turned me away from drugs (even pot) was when I started to learn more and more about how the forces behind the scenes PROMOTED drug use among kids for years (and still do today) through the media. The reason so many people think being a burnout is cool and "anti-establishment" is because this has been the vibe given to people for decades through the media -- that you're somehow rebelling against the system, when you're playing right into the hands of it. They WANT people to be dopey and apathetic.
Completely. And not to mention if they start admitting cannabis isn't as harmful as they say it is, their last hold on the issue would be removed and the wall of prohibition would collapse. At which point the alcohol, petroleum, paper, building material, synthetic fiber, pharmaceutical, plastic, and tobacco industries would all take huge hits (no pun intended..) and suffer loss. The same industries that lobby the fuck out of governments, giving them millions upon millions of dollars for campaign money. Then they turn around and pay "credible" scientists money to design bunk studies.
You're right man, although to me being a stoner hasnt ever made me dopey, burned out, and apathetic to the degree it makes me constantly think and question things. Thats a big reason why I think the govt hates drugs like weed and acid - they make people more conscious. But I do believe you are totally right about their desire for lethargic masses. There are something like 120 million americans taking anti depressants. Talk about the epitome of apathy...
Yep, and we all know that 76% of the Marijuana grown in the US is actually clandestinely grown by Campbell Foods Company... which makes immense profits off all the damn goldfish crackers it sells due to the ganja.
Yes, Rubin, go ahead and deny everything that's been proven and come up with some more stupid shit to say to mock me. You're sooo hip and trendy.
Haha, I ain't mockin' ya Matt. I was just making a silly joke. I think that you speak the truth in this thread, especially about the cocaine (which I don't think is shipped in by the government, but probably just ignored by the government in exchage for something)... and that smokin' the ganja and sittin' at la casa is truly not fighting any establishment... no sir. It only makes ya much more of a tool. Cake's "Rock n' Roll Lifestyle" comes to mind.
