Hey DdC, I wanted to make sure you saw the email below. On Tuesday Greenpeace released a report highlighting the use of toxic chemicals in the making of clothing from several global brands, including the largest fashion maker in the world ZARA.

So far we've sent more than 40,000 emails to the company directly urging it to detox their line and commit to transparency by 2020. We broke our goal! Let's not stop now. Help us reach a new goal of 50,000 and send your letter to ZARA right now.

    Thanks, John

Greenpeace Exposes Toxic Chemicals in Zara,
    Other Fast-Fashion Brands

    Dear DdC,

ZARA's clothing is polluting the world’s waters.

    Toxic Water in China

It’s time Zara cleaned up its act. Send a message now urging it to detox by 2020!

    take action today

For months, Greenpeace conducted research into many of the world’s top clothing brands and found disturbing news — ZARA, along with several other retailers — is polluting waters in China with hazardous chemicals.

Those chemicals then wash into our waters when we rinse our clothes. Most of the fashion industry is treating public waterways like its own private sewers.

It’s time we eliminate hormone-disrupting chemicals from the world’s waters before it’s too late. That’s why we’re challenging some of the most popular clothing brands to eliminate toxic chemicals from its process by 2020 — and we need your help.

If 40,000 of us send a message to ZARA in the next 48 hours it will encourage the company to take the pledge to detox its clothing and stop the use of hazardous chemicals. Send your message now.

Let’s face it, beautiful fashion shouldn't cause toxic pollution. H&M and British retailer Marks & Spencer know that. These companies have committed to eliminating all toxic chemicals from its supply chains and products. But ZARA, one of the world’s biggest fast fashion retailers, remains silent.

ZARA is famously responsive to trends and keeps a close watch on buzz about its brand. If all of us can pressure the company to follow in the footsteps of those who have committed to clean up its act, this is one trend it won’t be able to ignore.

We know it’s possible to clean up the toxics, we’ve seen it happen before. Thanks to you, the detox campaign secured commitments from Puma, Adidas and other sports apparel makers to clean up their practices and detox their line by 2020. So it can be done, but we’ll need your help. Reach out to ZARA right now with an urgent message to clean up its practices and detox today.

As consumers your voice is critical to convincing ZARA and other companies to do the right thing. If the company responds the rest of the industry could follow, so it’s urgent we act now.

    Thanks for your help,

    John Deans

That's piling stupid onto greed. China could easily expand its hemp fashions without the poisons, as could we. DdC

    High on Hemp

    Hemp Baby Clothing
Hemp is a very durable, much stronger than cotton, and a breathable fabric that is often combined with organic cotton in the making of organic baby clothes.

Extremely comfortable, the fabric created from hemp is similar in appearance to linen, but far softer; it's also totally machine washable, which is great given the mess that babies often make. Naturally UV resistant, sensitive baby skin will be protected in the warm summer sun.

Hemp is grown naturally, without the use of pesticides, and is more ecological than cotton, which uses massive amounts of water to produce - whether it's organic or conventional. Given that fact, you can see why it is a preferred fiber in the making of organic clothing; a one-two-punch to help the environment.

Do you know where your clothes were made?
Hemp grows well without herbicides, fungicides, or pesticides. Almost half of the agricultural chemicals used on US crops are applied to cotton.

    Chemical Cotton vs Organic Hemp

-1 acre of hemp will produce as much as 2-3 acres of cotton.
"Marijuana and Hemp: The Untold Story" Thomas Bouril, 1997

-Cotton crops in the USA occupy 1% of the country's farmland but use 50% of all pesticides.
The Emperor Wears No Clothes, Jack Herer, 1993

    Hemp vs. Cotton

-Environmentally, hemp is a safer crop to grow than cotton. Cotton is a soil-damaging crop and needs a great deal of fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides.
"Frequently Asked Questions about Cannabis Hemp" Brian S. Julin, 1994

    Textiles & Fabrics

-Industrial hemp can be grown on a wide variety of soil types, but tends to grow best on land that produces high yields of corn.

Hemp, Hemp, Hooray? No Way, Says DEA

"The last thing law-enforcement people need is for the cultivation of marijuana-looking plants to spread. Are we going to ask them to go through row by row, field by field, to distinguish between legal hemp and marijuana?"

Seems it's a very high priority for D.E.A. to keep hemp illegal.
