A good IT tech does not simply jump on every update or new software revision. It is best to research and test to find out exactly what updates are for and if they are even worth the time.[/quote]
I have to agree with Noxious on this one, you research every upgrade? As if you do

No, I disable updates and only update when I know I need to. And testing software was not my job at the company I worked for. There was a whole Software Quality Control department with a dozen people that were supposed to make sure all applications were working. Go ahead and think your bank info'd be safer in a bank migrating to Win 10 any time soon, if that's how clueless you all want to be.

sometimes updates introduce new bugs, some bugs get covered up, only to resurface later. as far as policies I think it depends on the company, the risk and what is risk and consequences are deemed acceptable and balancing the security triangle.

"Software Quality Control Dept" sounds like bullshit.

Any company I've ever seen that had an IT dept with a senior IT tech, it was their job to make sure all the Information Technology was functional.
If my friend can maintain a data base of all the software, hardware, revisions and updates of all his clients networks and workstations across a couple of dozen companies, don't understand why it was so hard for you to handle a few hundred stations at one company.

as far as how safe win xp and server 2000 are, you really are clueless and actually haven't any idea what you are talking about, do you?
I would bet that they are using unix as the backbone of their network. you don't actually think BofA is using something like MS-SBS do you.....LOL.

like I said, I feel bad for whatever company(s) you worked for.

So anyway, turns out that Microsoft had to give in and relinquish a tiny bit of control. I am not the only person dead set against automatic updates. Enough people complained about Win 10 forced updates that thay had to add an update that gives users the option to disable some updates, but only AFTER they are automatically force installed on the OS. So still pretty lame, in my supposedly 'inept' opinion.

Uhmmm, you do know that the option to NOT download updates or to remove them has been available ever since they started doing automatic updates,
so what the fuck you talking about?

the calculator is new and improved. programmer mode has an extra setting where you can toggle individual bits ... I was using programmer mode with insider preview but just now noticed that they added a bit toggling mode, not sure if it was in insider preview and just didn't notice it.

Lolz, the calculator is improved is it, now thats exciting

I have to ask the question again to all of you, cos its been bugging me

Put up with it at work, but why the hell do you even need a windows computer at home, why do you even need a desktop at home anymore

Bluetooth keyboard, tv, os on your phone. What cant you do you with that you need a desktop for?

you don't really need a windows computer. tablets are probably all some people really need, since it seems like so many people pretty much only use their computer for web browsing now. i prefer a desktop with a "real" keyboard with old style keys, but most desktop keyboards are preferable over the typical laptop keyboard. I find myself making more mistakes when writing code on a laptop, and the fact that the mousepad on some laptops is easy to accidentally nudge with your palm can lead to the cursor being moved and you find yourself typing over some stuff that you didnt want to type over.

i guess it depends on the person and what they use computers for. some people like to play video games and such, I used to but not so much into it anymore save for the occasional NES or SNES game played on an emulator.

i thought the calculator thing was pretty nifty, being able to toggle individual bits in a word and see the corresponding hex values is a good feature. of course kcalc on linux has had this feature for a very long time and for all I know the one on windows may have been that way all along and I just never needed to use it.

So mainly hardware, old school reasons. I thought so.

I switched to wireless mice and keyboards long ago, even with laptops

But then again, never understood the windows thing, always been a linux user.

VG, your question of why bother with PC's is more valid than ever now with the arrival of windows 10.

The best thing about Windows PC's USED to be total control, install anything unsigned or not, use whatever hardware you want, disable any system services you want...

Now Microsoft has been chipping away our freedom, forced obsolescence of perfectly fine hardware and software, enforcing of signed drivers only, now forced updates.

Windows is becoming more and more useless to me while Android tablets can do a lot of what I want, not everything of course but for a lot of people it can. Android OS can support keyboards, mice, usb hubs, printers... There's word processing and dozens of browsers and countless apps of all sorts, even scientific hexadecimal programmer calculators. Google is also a bit of a control freak about these devices but there are custom roms with the option to not install Google services. There is one huge downfall with Android, their systems are compiled for specific hardware so adding drivers is a rather nasty bugger. I've heard that maybe, if you're a linux genius, someone could copy Ubuntu drivers into a rooted Android OS and edit the init script.

Gaming, photo editing, graphic design, CAD/CAM, digital video editing, sound editing/creation are just a small sampling of things that can not be done on a tablet/phone and often not very well on a laptop, so the idea that desktops are obsolete simply further adds to the evidence that you have no clue what you are talking about.

Os's will probably go the way of the dinosaur.

Coming soon to a discount store near you, no PCs for sale, thin clients with no operating systems

you really are not very intelligent, are you.
Posting lists of the top whatever # of apps for Android doesn't for a second mean that they perform as well or better than the desktop versions.
Have you ever actually dealt with any of these programs?
I have, I've worked as a tech for an Autodesk reseller and I promise you, Autocad360 most likely sucks dirty balls. I say that being familiar with how crappy Autodesk software can be and the limitations of the hardware platforms involved.

So you gonna open an 18 gig drawing on your tablet and then be able to actually edit it?.........LOL I think not.

The same principle applies to all the other software you listed.
sure they can write stuff for android, but I guarantee it isn't nearly as good, detailed or robust as a Windows or Unix based application on a desktop platform.

Did you even bother to read the descriptions of the programs in these lists?
most of the productivity ones are pretty fucking crippled to say the least and only allow the viewing and rudimentary editing.

every time you post something whether it be tech or religion related, you show yourself to be utterly clueless.
