Very little potential in a hipster period, aside from the potential to be filled with buckshot from my shotgun if they set foot on my property
Its just the latest subcultural trend dude. In a few years they're rare and outdated, like punkers, goths and dare i say it.... hippies.
I'm a bit of a shoegazer. Actually those guys (and girls) got called that because they used a lot of effects pedals for their live shows. Thus the staring down at the feet.
It was UK bands like My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Lush, Slowdive. The music was kind of druggy, fazed out. It was an early '90s thing. They used a lot of guitar effect pedals which sit on the floor when they played live. So they were always looking down at their shoes. The guitar work was also pretty sophisticated compared to grunge so they also were looking down at their guitars. Thus "Shoegazing." But it also came to mean a kind of non-commital insousiance that came to be associated with the scene.
The term "shoegazing" was coined by the British music press to ridicule the stage presence of a wave of neo-psychedelic groups who stood still during live performances in a detached, introspective, non-confrontational state with their heads down. This was because the heavy use of effects pedals meant the performers were often looking down at the readouts on their effects pedals during concerts. (wiki)
