What is Chavez's brutal murderous history? You've been brainwashed by the US media I'm afraid. It really annoys me when people attack Chavez without actually any evidence to support their accusation, or very much knowledge on the subject at all. Try some other sources and you might actually see what a hugely positive influence Chavez has been when concerning the poor in Venezuela.

Do we need Carlfloydfan and a committee of his neat, tidy and proper preppy friends to make their recommendations and impose what should be considered "tasteful" for everyone else to follow and adhere to? Hmmm.

Violence can be of two kinds. Both the physical and mental.
So, what appears to be a "peaceful" act may actually be a form of violence done on the mind.

 

Violence has no excuse.

 

Who exactly did we ever commit to except the petroleum industry? We didn't start this thing to spread democracy that argument was used later after the weapons of mass destruction weren't found, and 09/11 wasn't instigated by Iraq. So where was the committment at the beginning of the war?

Right now we are continuing because the new Iraqi government refuses to sign the PSAs until we can prove that their fat asses are protected. And the big corporate interests don't want to be left on their own or unprotected. They wouldn't have to absorb the cost of their own protection...now would they when they can get it for free and continue to up their profit margin.

But I am not going to die for George W. Bush/Dick Cheney/Carl Rove, Neo-con's stupid abstract theorizing about spreading American style "freedom and democracy" to some faraway exotic land and culture that probably might not even want it to begin with.

Military power has it's limits. Hard lessons learned from the Vietnam War and the current conflict in Iraq.

The current release of the British sailors by Iran secured through quiet behind the scenes negotiations and diplomacy prove that if only our politicians use their brains to explore other options to solve problems, rather than just resorting to "cowboy, trying to be tough" rhetoric and posturing, the tragedy in Iraq could have been avoided.

But sadly, of course, certain segments of American society actually wanted WAR to happen, regardless. The war-hawks, the war profiteers, the military-industrial complex would probably find ways to justify going to war every few years or so, just to keep business$$$ going...

now I have got the attention of all the chipanzees here who dont know what they are talking about anymore, skips argument is that the armed forces are not a force that has Americas best interest at heart anymore, the armed forces are just a bunch of paid mercenaries. He thinks that the army should be patriotic but my answer is

If the armed forces were patriotic, it would mean they were political. No country wants a politicised army, men fight harder for their paycheck than any dick cheese politicians smoothtalk. Soldiers are hard bastards with a gun that care about three things. Pay, family, getting home alive !!!! have no illusions no soldier ever was all that patriotic - just that usually the pay and conditions are quite good, so they eat for another month

I'm a veteran and appauled by this thread. I serve my time in the army. The problem is your not looking at the ratio of people in the military service. Many of the soldiers come from a low income family which can't afford to provide a college education for their kids. And grants and scholarships only go so far. So poof a recruiter shows up and offers you a paid job training program and money for college free medical, 30 days paid vacation a year (when your not deployed) I received almost a quarter of a million dollars worth of training in firefighting that there is no other way I could of received unless I joined the military. We need to look at providing a way that college can be made affordable and open to the masses.

 

touchè froggyfish, you are quite right . they understood that men are enslaved more easily through necessity rather than fear , and made the military the "profession of the future" . A very dark future, I guess. you see, there is also a host of asshole armchair brigade veterans, war-by-itself enthusiasts that exacerbate the discussion so that many relevant issues fall in second place.

again right. of course this implies class struggle, since those who have interest in keeping a large plateau of ignorant, poor and needy people to feed the war machine are the same who actually stole your rights , like instruction health care and decent work , and the same who wanted the war. And they dont belong to the class in which we fall. Say I am a communist ? sure you can bet , along with my father and his father before him.
Work, instruction and medical care are rights for everyone, not privileges. They should be granted FOR FREE. Without them there is no real democracy, as you experienced.

and then there is a second thing to consider.
froggyfish, are you a Iraq/Afghanistan veteran ? did you actually get into action? did you kill someone? if the answer to these questions is yes, ask yourself:

1) what could the relatives of your victim(s) -if you actually killed- possibly think about your reasons ?
2) were all the benefits you took worth one or more human lives ?
3) were all the benefits you took worth a guilty conscience ? if you were one, can you still consider yourself a christian ?

you see, all of the things you said can explain how comes that so many young healty men and women "spontaneously" accepted to kill and die but this is not an excuse. that's the difference between the iraqi partisans facing the power of U.S. army and you: they have rights and reasons defending their own lives and country, and a lot of guts too, you just feeble excuses . And I'd bet their lifestyle was way lower than yours even before recruitment.

 

I don't have a guilty conscience. Everyone has rights. But like my old plt ldr said. War isn't meant to figure out who's right, just who's left.
So let me put it this way. If people blatantly don't support the troops and we do have a war pop up we can't resolve through diplomacy. now we as a nation are going to turn to a group of people we have out casted, and now we're going to ask them to help us?
Not everyone who goes to war is infantry. There are many support roles. I.e. I did firefighting with a specialty in emergency trauma medicine.

 

Yes, thank you for your ongoing support for this Iraq war, another bunch of people died there just the past couple of days.

I have never said I support this war, infact I demonstrate with Veterans For Peace. So please do not put words into my mouth.
We as America should support everything that deals with peace. In my opinion we need a Secretary of peace. But I still realize in this day in age that not everyone can follow a higher standard. America can become a peaceful state but how can we guarentee that the rest of the world will follow? How can we assure the American people they are free from a violent world? The military provides more than just war. They help fight forest fires in california to helping medevac injured highschool students in Enterprise, Alabama. We need to stress all ways possible before ever getting into a war. War should be the very very very last way. I'm sure all the people rescued by the coast guardsmen in New orleans hate them. I just can't agree with not supporting the troops. But everyone is entitled to their opinions.

 

Actually, saying you are against the war and yet you support the people directly involved in the continued prosecution of the killings, atrocities, occupation in this Iraq war is an assinine proposition.

It's like saying you hate baseball and yet you support baseball players.

Baseball is what baseball players do for a living.

War is what soldiers are trained to kill and die for.

If your looking to appreciate those who put out fires in California, go thank the firefighters.

The instruments of war, soldiers included have not met their stated goals in Iraq, if they even knew what their goals were to begin with.

And the instruments of war, soldiers included surely do not make the world a safer place.

Don't even try to argue with those fools, brother. They would rather rejoice at 100 US servicemen killed in the line of duty than mourn the death of one Iraqi child. They have venemous hate for some humans and illogical love for others. They pick and choose the people they hate which makes them no better and no less arrogant than our oppressors and all the while they hide behind the title "hippy". I've tried talking sense here. It's futile. The human race has lost it's ability to see past the television and we stand on the brink of economic and ecological armageddon. The best we as sensible people can do is get out of Babylon before it falls upon us as well. Peace.
