I don't remember flights ever being on time, and strongly suspect that you're being affected by nostalgia in your memory of that.

But, I remember flying as a little kid, and it was loads of fun, the atmosphere was happy and relatively carefree - because without the constant fear of being shot or disappearing for saying the wrong thing or something (remember, you're 29x more likely to be killed by a cop than a terrorist in the US - more cops and less terrorists does not make airports as safe as you might assume), airplanes are awesome, flying in them is awesome, and sitting in the pilot's lap was the shit.

The gestapo really makes it stressful and shitty to even be near an airport.

Yeah, flying as a kid I'd always end up touring the cockpit, getting shown all the buttons to never press, being given wing pins, etc.

However, I've never done any more adult lap sitting that would qualify me for any altitute/action based clubs - some day, if the world stays stable enough long enough.

The one time i was young enough to visit the cockpit the plane before us crashed. The pilots just wanted to sit alone after circling for an hour.

we used to have these things you didn't have to drive, and you could actually see all the scenery, usually on one side at a time, the entire trip. you could get up and walk around and to get something to eat. sure they took some time to get somewhere, but it was time to relax away from all the screwed up crap wherever you were coming from, and whatever awaited you when you got there would be an adventure. they may have taken time. but they also gave it. they were called trains, and before everyone started worshiping the automobile, and forgot they existed, they were the most fun of all.

I remember when most travelers got all dressed up to fly. Men in suits and women in dresses. Wearing sweatpants to fly was the exception, rather than the rule. I'm not talking about the 1950's...it was still like this up to the 1980's.

The most irritating sight at an airport was a businessman with a cell phone back when they were a rare sight. They had to show how important they were by carrying on business calls loud enough for everyone in the terminal to know what a big shot they were.

And Hare Krishnas. Holy shit they were irritating.

I always hear about that like we're missing something now. Horseshit, I say.

I want to be comfortable, I'm not offended by other people being comfortable. I also don't want to have to take off a full fucking suit when the gestapo wants to scan and fondle and strip me.

I agree. I never dressed up to fly. I was just making an observation.

the reason people got dressed up to fly, and before that, to ride trains, is because travel in those days was an event,
and if you didn't slick up for the city, people would think you were a hick from the sticks, and thereby an easy mark.

all that was made ancient history of course, by the automobile becoming a way of life.

but it reminded people to be both considerate, as well as on their guard, while at the same time,
opening people's eyes to diversity, and thus the railway's civilizing influence.

the same diversity, that by making travel too easy in a sense, the automobile, has destroyed almost entirely.
