North Bay, "Gateway to the North". Basically as far south as you can be while still being considered to be in Northern Ontario.

It's now raining and really gross out there, but will freeze up again overnight probably.

Taken in bc just now out my sunroom window. My yard is almost set up for summer but the sprinklers aren't on yet. Guy should be here next week to fire up my water system and check all the sprinkler heads. Grass looks shitty till they are running.

A few years ago I had this obsession with northern Ontario and so badly wanted to move there. There was a period of like a month where I was researching all these towns (Hearst, Timmins, Cochrane), and I remember reading a lot about North Bay. There is something that seems so quaint and so remote about those northern towns that I just find appealing.

Let me ask you this... how easy is it to find good, organic food up there?

Or do you plan to go inuit (partly)? They do seem to live healthy on a diet of mainly fat

Unfortunately the Inuits are not nearly as healthy as they used to be before they were deluged with junk food shipped up from the south.

I've heard something about that. They can't hunt as much as they used to either? Or they could but it's not allowed... or certain amount of seal and other sea mammals only?

I used to have a cabin near Timmins with my X. Nice area but we only saw it in summer.

and it makes people drive like assholes. i mean, more than usual.

shower doors with locks? i've never heard of such a thing. besides the college dorm showers i guess, when they were basically just like toilet stalls except with a shower instead of a toilet. as far as home shower doors, they just slide open or closed as you wish in my experience.

I only moved up here last September, so I haven't really been here for a full season yet, but it seems pretty easy. There is a farmer's market down the street from me that runs until October, lots of selection there (just fruits and veggies though, no meat, cheese, or eggs).

We actually signed up for a Community Supported Agriculture program this year. Basically it involves pre-paying for a seasons worth of organic produce from a local farm, and then each week during the growing season we pick up a basket of produce from a drop-off site in town. I think it was like $440 or something for 17 or 18 weeks worth of fresh veggies.

I have a couple of friends who used to live up near Hearst in a tiny little town in the middle of the forest. Quaint it not the word I would use to describe it. Sad and full of cocaine and creepy 30 year olds partying with 16 year olds is more like it.

    North Bay is nice, though.

Not sure if it is still there but there was a farmers market Wlyd and Oak Street and they had a meat provider that was Holden's Hideaway Farm. Organic. Might be worth checking out. :)

I was there for a summer on a course under ground if you know about that. Now it's all above but I spent most of my days away from the sun and sights of what North Bay had to offer. Mind you the bits I did see were awesome. If snow wasn't my issue I would move there and could have even been posted there but managed to avoid that at the time which was a good thing then.
