When I got off the bus way back in elementary school, my siblings and I had to walk a half mile uphill on a very steep and windy road without sidewalks all by ourselves. We just had to hope nobody would be driving too fast around those blind corners. And sometimes the neighbor's terrier would chase us and that little fucker would bite hard. We would walk down that hill with an old croquet mallet to fend it off. The bus driver wouldn't drive up that street because they said it was too difficult for a bus to go up our road, which was bullshit because garbage trucks and fire trucks have gone up and down that road successfully.
The school bus will not pick up my neighbors at my current residence because the road is too narrow and winds too much, no room for a bus and car at the same time, so the kids do walk about a mile to the stop...and they do walk, their parents seldom drive them.
