I suspect that it was sulphuric acid. sold as a drain cleaner. When it dilutes in water, the reaction is exothermic and the heat causes burns, along with the acid, the moisture in his skin would have started the reaction. Anyone adding water to remove the acid would have simply made things worse. In event of splashing, it needs to be sponged off dry.
Some years ago, a ruptured hose at a distribution depot filled a guys wellington with the acid and a co-worker put a fire hose down his boot to dilute and flush the acid. The resultant reaction resulted in the guy loosing his leg. The case made legal history, because when he claimed injury compensation he was prosecuted for breach of health and safety. Although he had been told to wear his protective suit over his boots, no one had explained the reason why. The co-worker was also prosecuted.
