OBL and his ilk are contrarians. Nobody will ever find a way to negotiate with people like him and groups like that. I don't think it is right for governments to always think: "So, what would .... think about that" when going about their business. Yes, there are certain times the consequences need weighing, but not all the time. This isn't one of those times, imho. Well, not as far as pissing off OBL. I can understand the political ramifications might be adverse... ...so then governments/political parties talk to each other. I know I'm an idealist, but I'm sick and tired of OBLs reactions being added to the equation all of the time. If you were to speak to him, I'm sure the mere fact Muslims live in America is enough to piss the guy off. I just did that because they aren't really called The Sauds... I wasn't meaning to be sarcastic.
perhaps, though it's not the only reason for not wanting to see more weaponry in the region sorry, sorta lazy, like 'the windsors' . . .
if i were a cynical person i might think that the USA were giving the saudi's wotever they want in the hope that'll keep them in line with the rest of the opec countries in not flooding the world with cheap oil, which the saudi's claim they can do.. and have certainly hinted that they will do in the last few years and i'm sure that when the saudi's first offered this contract to the US they made it very clear that they could refuse it with no hard feelings.... and the fact that they'd just ordered a billion shiny new unused oil barrels was purely coincidental
