The difference between you convicting black metal and my conviction of Gaga's pop music is that I have actually taken in account more than just the show element. I just acknowledge it is an important part of pop music getting sold to the audience. I am not saying this is completely the opposite for music genres that don't fall under pop music. It is certain to me though that black metal first rise to fame was not because of their show elements or that a nitwit or 2 burned some churches (sure it helped getting media attention), but because of their refreshing approach to the metal genre. I did not base my opinion on Lady Gaga on my kid's friends playing her kind of music in the rehearsal room for fun ;) I actually listened to her pop tunes (which were nearly inescapable). You should do the same if you want your opinion on black metal to actually be valued by those who acknowledge the artistic value of it (by experience/paying attention to it). I don't blame you for not wanting to listen to it, but I can't take your opinion on it seriously if you don't ;)

At least I acknowledge convicting a kind of music is based on subjective taste or a lack of interest.

I already told you, I've listened to black metal, I know people in blackmetal bands, One of them is the son of a friend of mine, he's a great drummer, but I can't stand the music for lots of reasons and one of them isn't that I don't like heavy music.

Anyway, This thread is about Lady Gaga's singing and musical talent, which has been quite well demonstrated even to those that have no ear for her pop music.

I didn't mean to make it about black metal, I was just going on about your example ;) And it has been pointed out already nobody is arguing her talent. The people criticizing her music or career just don't like how she uses her talent. It is clearly a matter of personal taste. A lot of people with developed music taste shit on this kind of pop music. So to say we simply don't have an ear for it is not that far off at all. Same with you not having an ear for black metal (apparently). We don't have to come in agreeance on each other's taste. It is just wise to acknowledge it is a matter of personal likes and dislikes. I for one dislike Lady Gaga's pop music and no matter how many people would conclude it makes me (or neonspectraltoast) a cultural dinosaur or something else, it doesn't make it so and it doesn't make such an opinion invalid either. I still doubt how much quality black metal you have listened based on earlier discussions we had but ok, that may be for another thread/pm session :)

I managed fine without hearing Lady Gaga for however long she's been in the public eye (Two years? Five? Ten? I have no idea, nor does it matter). Her songs are easily escapable.

Then a couple of months ago there was a bunch of her pop videos on TV, and I decided to watch it, and listen to her hits. I still have no idea which were huge hits and which were lesser hits, and 10 minutes after the programme ended I couldn't remember how any of the songs went.
This morning I watched her appearance at the Oscars, and she was excellent, really really good.

I'll bet Justin Bieber sings better than you, what's your point?

She's not rebellious when it comes to music, perhaps her fashion is rebellious, I don't know I'm not a fashion aficianado. If that is so then perhaps this thread should be moved to the appropriate forum.

The OP does not mention pop music. It was about a specific performance.

That's pretty much typical of what you get in the middle section of Gaga's large venue concerts.

Agreed. I am also fortunate enough to rarely be in a situation where I am involuntarily confronted with hit radio.

    Lame. Taste. Subjective.

The thread title already invites to expand on that as it says silences her critics. It didn't really silence them :p

Actually, it has made them a lot louder and angrier.

I was thinking about people who had said in the past that she had very limited vocal talent.

I've never heard "One Eye", but when she covered Julie Andrews on Sunday she was excellent.

He has an impressive singing voice, I heard it. You would probably lose that bet (if it wasn't a subjective matter!). But your question as to what exactly his point was in that quote seems valid to me. Especially because people actually were saying things that seemed to imply that her business succes makes our criticism invalid.

To decide that, you'd have to have "Career Choices" split in to sub-sections like "Monetary Success" and "Musical Integrity", I suppose

  18. I saw the one where she's crawling around like a baby while some douche watches her from a chair.

Yes, and our generation has...Lady Gaga and Paris Hilton. Who would know about sex, money, and misogyny if it weren't for these two champions of change.

Gaga isn't even half as provocative as Madonna was. I lived through the eighties and Madonna was EVERYWHERE and people were actually very upset about her. Now we live in the age of internet and porno. Nobody is shocked by Gaga's antics.

Ha, when big hair was in.

I thought she was pretty big in her day, but maybe Heart was bigger in Canada. They got their start here. When things weren't going anywhere in the U.S. they came here and really took off before eventually going back to the States. Or depending on which story you choose to believe, Ann wanted to be with Mike Fisher (lead guitar) who ran to Canada to avoid being drafted so the band moved to Canada. Later when her sister Nancy joined, Nancy started going out with Roger Fisher (swoon), Mike's brother, who joined as guitarist and backup vocalist. All in the family. Until the guys cheated on them and the sisters threw them out of the band. lol

Back to Gaga… I looked up some of her jazz performances. Now those are good! I think her voice is well suited to that genre.
