It will be interesting to see what she chooses as her path in the future.

Today there is more infusion of styles in music than ever before. Youth of today have been exposed to more genres of music than ever before so given that I think she could have a following from that. I think the issue would be for die hard fans of her pop style not being open to her wanting to experiment or mix it up. Think back to those who ranted about Dylan selling out.

Nothing is more stagnating in music than not changing. For the artist and for the fans. We all want to hear standards but the artists today who are still relevant from decades ago are the ones who also mixed it up over the years. Sometimes more successfully than others mind you. :)

I still dont think Gaga or anyone else compares to Amy Winehouse

I'm usually confined to Metal or Techno, Winehouse is one that brings me out of that for a time

Winehouse the best female jazz type singer of the last 20 years

Like I said I didn't listen to Gaga's jazz but I have to admit at first instance, via the mainstream channels and purely as a musical artist Amy Winehouse and her music was (is) much more spectacular and impressive to me than Lady Gaga. I also want to say that what I've heard of both so far is that they made very different kinds of pop music so this is just a taste (subjective) issue. Amy Winehouse's music and performances were more pure and honest (which I admit are pretty lame and generic terms in describing music you prefer :p :D), and less entrenched with all those elements of show and how to score big hits. But yes, it's true those elements just don't suit my music taste or impress me in music.

She did a duet with Tony Bennett a few years ago, too. Maybe someone's already mentioned that earlier, I don't know........ But yeah, She was amazing on that track. Definitely a versatile singer.

I don't really see what game neon is playing in that post? His link is in direct relation to the thread (silencing her critics... or not). We don't have to like that he goes on about it, but if he came across that article/blog and felt like sharing it because it relates to this thread... well then he's not playing a game necessarily :p
I can also fully understand how artists feel about certain critics and criticism, but I have realized for a long time that if they have reached a big audience and want to keep that audience that they just have to suck it (the criticism I mean ;)).

  9. It's no game. I saw the link and thought it would be relevant. Admittedly I smiled when I saw the link.

Of course I didn't see Gaga's SOM performance, so I can't laugh along with Sondheim, but I sort of get what he's saying. Who watches Sound of Music and hears those songs and thinks "Gaga"??? Every time I watch SOM now I'm going to be imagining the Von Trapp family wearing cone boob bras and diamond encrusted train engineer's caps instead of leiderhosen. The two seem totally irrelevant to each other.

Hey, somebody photoshopped out the chrome-plated cone bra! ;)

The link I had originally posted in the OP was a little higher in quality, but it's been taken down.

They are irrelevant to eachother but so is your association to be fair. It's like saying Meatloaf is at fault for making me think of Paradise by the dashboard light when I see him in Fight club while I should just get over it. Same with if you let Gaga ruin your experience with Sound of music.

Unfortunately, some people read too much into my thread title. People used to say that Gaga had no proven singing ability, because they felt that her pop songs neither proved nor disproved anything about pure vocal talent. The "Sound of Music" soundtrack is known to be an extremely demanding piece of music. Only the most gifted sopranos dare to attempt it. When Gaga nailed it, up to the standards of Julie Andrews herself, I thought that would put an end to people saying that she couldn't sing. That's all. It never crossed my mind that somebody would think that one performance might magically make everybody suddenly start liking her personality, image, style, political and social views, etc. That would be a rather absurd thing for anybody to think.

Julie Andrews is a very positive person, not given to criticizing anyone in public. I'm guessing that's why she never commented on Carrie Underwood's weak effort to cover her material. If she had been unimpressed by Gaga's performance, I'm sure she would have said something polite that didn't really say anything. That's not what happened. Julie's ears, and my own, tell me that I don't need to concern myself with what the haters want to say at this point. The whole thing just went over their heads.

Even if the thread title would be different opinions of any kind should still at least be considered valid to share ;) Unless the thread title would say feel good thread for Gaga fans (no critics allowed) :p

I watched her performance at the oscars and I wasn't impressed in the sense of it moved me or I found it to be beautiful. Allright she hits all the notes. That's it for me. But as stated before in this thread to (certain) music fans it is the music that has to impress or move a person, not the quality of the voice of the person executing it. Granted, the quality of a skilled good voice can make it beautiful, just as the music can obscure the quality of the artist at times (as is IMHO the case with Gaga's pop music).

  15. What if Meatloaf did a Frozen medley? Would that be all right?

I support Meatloaf even if he went into porn :p I just wouldn't care. Same with Lady Gaga. The 'hit parade' in both your and my country has been raped and sucks ass since pretty much before my birth. She can stay in the upper charts all her life for all I care. I just like to state how I see it in threads like this :D
