it is a baited question concerning one statement taken completely out of context and yes Mr. Writer is wanting to force a dogmatic and literal interpretation of it.
sorry, the context simply doesn't allow for it. again it was/is about being/staying prepared, not about beating slaves or about punishment for non-believers.
Jesus himself didn't intend a lot of what he said to be taken literally, "he who has ears, let him hear".
thedope gave further insight into the "lesson" of the parable.
Remember this was spoken in a time when slavery and whipping a slave for poor performance were as common as someone putting gas in their car is today and not looked upon in the same manner at all.

Why worship the crap if Jesus didn't even want it to be taken literally?

What does worship the crap mean? The parable accurately portrays what occurs in the environment we live in. If you are assigned a task as an employee and left to your own devices and you don't fulfill the task then you are subject to reprimand by your employer. If it can be shown you really didn't comprehend the instructions or suffered some other incapacity then the employer is likely to be some what softer in his approach. On the other hand if you do well you might get a raise or at least you gain the confidence of your employer, i.e. fortunate are those that are awake when the master comes for he will gird himself and serve you.

very well put and one of those things that can only be known through experience.

I often think of that exact Moody Blues lyric you quoted.

thedope, may I ask does it almost always have a "reflective" quality about it in that whatever the situation, when you "remember" does it carry connotations of how it applies to your life as well as the current specific situation.
I have found that as I plod along in life, I have become keenly aware of perceiving myself in others and other situations, everything from songs, movies, interpersonal relations, interacting with folks on forums, etc.
it all is presented to me with a "mirror like" aspect that forces me to recognize and confront aspects of myself reflected in others.

Personally I believe that is one of the tricks to playing this game, being able to see oneself in an instructive manner in every other person or situation. (Make note, Noxious declared a belief)

Think about, when the dust all settles the only thing I am certain of is my existence and experience, everything else is illusion assembled in my mind and it is very well within the scope of grand possibility that the play is being performed solely for my benefit.
"you ever get the feeling that the story's too damn real and in the present tense, or that everybody is on the stage and seems like your the only person sitting in the audience?"

If you have read my posts in these kind of threads (and remember them) you understand you can stop assuming that ;) I was only raised as a christian and understand following the teachings of Jesus but not take them literally means people are using their brains and following their own beliefs and stances instead of accepting literal interpretations as if they were, well, dogmas. As Nox explained the bible (which is only part of the religion) is full of parables and other stuff that is not ment to be taken literally. When atheists like mr Writer are trying to connect such a bible verse to the belief of a christian he seems to be trying to put them in a corner (forged by his own misunderstanding and urge to state something absolute :p). But it is not a problem at all when christians have different interpertations on the same bible verses. In fact, it is a good thing. The bible, as well as other holy books, and religions, are tools. People who question the content and still get the wisdom from it (and really there's a lot of insight to be gained from religions, 'even' abrahamic) are most likely the ones who get the most from it. They can be christians but they don't even have to be christians for that. Just have a genuine interest :)

you do understand what a parable is, correct?
I hope you are also able to grasp metaphor and analogy as well.

A parable by definition is a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson. A suggestive tale.

HAHAHHA! WTF ! All I did was rephrase what you asserted in the form of a question, asking why someone would worship that.

    Nice photobucket.

In answer to your question yes. Everything a measure of self reflection.

At one point I did feel isolated. Then I began to see our common accord is in fact present but fear suppresses it's expression. That is we get the idea no one would love us if they really knew what was inside. So it is not that I am alone but that others are cloaked from both the outside and in by their secret struggles.

AS far as your belief the fact is that we become comfortable as we become familiar. Self awareness/discovery is a learning and teaching proposition. As I have said before my effort is to remove the barriers we have erected to the perception of love which is the prime mover of all our activities. Everything an expression of love or the call for it.

Ok, but I thought it is pretty clear that it was a parable and not intended for literal interpretation.
That much is very evident when the specific verse is taken in the context of the entire conversation.

it is probably better for folks to find a version not broken up into verses. It makes it much easier to grasp concepts when they are not broken into fragments and harder to cherry-pick things to quote out of context.

And when it is more than 2000 years old and is handling an aspect of that society that no longer is considered normal it is easily found out (yes people, even by christians :p ;) well the ones I know at least) how useful it is to interprete it literally or not :)
But although somewhere in this there can maybe found some version of the scientific method :p I think we are going slightly off topic and into the same old diversions again. This thread does not have to end in another debate about religion and bible verses and dogmas.
It is about if there is ANY room for God in science. This question seems to trigger reactions like if we consider this seriously we are asking for a return to medieval times. Like if we acknowledge there is any room for God in science all scientists and all fields have to incorporate God into their work or thinking :p This is of course not what is ment with such a question. It is for the people in science that DO have room for it. And as I understand it many don't have any problem with that (because they go by their own associations and don't get mad or extreme anti against the concept or often even the word 'God' because they can't get past their associations of people that are doing dubious things in the name of their religion).

Ah the barriers we erect. What use science if not the love of wisdom.

You asked the question in this thread. How are we supposed to know with certainty the import of that question?

I assume that was directed at me.
funny, you are the one that apparently is having a problem comprehending a simple thing like what a parable is and I'm the jack-ass.....LOL

If worship is what makes people inclined to think there shouldn't be any room for God in science it might just fit very well in this thread.
