There are some forum posters who seem to regard a long running forum topic as a subject worth defending with their life. There was this one guy who really got upset with me because he didn't agree with my post, so he posted a rather abusive comment at me. He was a senior member and should have known better, so I guess he was defending his position in front of all his mates on there, because he didn't want to lose face over the topic in which he was obviously the main player. To be quite honest, if those kind of people get worked up as easily as that because they can't stand their point of view being questioned or criticised, then they shouldn't be posting on a forum. After all everyone is entitled to their own opinion whether you like it or not, so there's no need to be abusive if you don't agree someone point of view. Careful constructive criticism is fine on a forum not abusive insulting behaviour.
Some people are more open and honest online because the consequences of being a nonconformist are fewer.
What's wrong with being someone new on the internet? Where else do you have such a stature of freedom and anonymity? I think the animosity of 'internet people' is a justifiable response to the daily bull shit we take in day to day. We can get out frustrations to real people without suffering any real consequence. However it is hilarious how you mentioned even simple comments can trigger such dramatic reactions, but now that everyone's used to it, you know not to take it personally
Word! Or in other words people that dislike stuff that other people do or think but they don't understand, and therefor feel the need to repeatedly (until no end) point out those other people are all wrong
I try not to... really. I love the anonymity though, so I may be one of the guilty ones. I'll say this. I am aware of the tendency to exaggerate and such, and so I make an effort not to do so.
How can you take anyone really seriously that you cannot even see face to face? I am here as i like to write...that's about it.
The more I think about it, the more I realize that it's mostly the superficial things that you can hide online for a long time. The things that matter most about a person will come out over time, as others see how you deal with people and how you react to situations that come up.
Seems like a waste of time to bullshit about anything, really. I'm a dumb-ass roofer with a pocket full of opinions that don't mean a thing and I've never hidden what I do or my age either. But I do have fun in here being a smart-ass sometimes. I tried another site once and spoke as I do in here----BANG--GONE. Fuck 'em.
I agree, the dynamics of real life convo often don't really lend itself to genuine discussion very well. Often times a charismatic person can dominate an irl convo whether or not they are saying anything interesting or even intelligible at all. I find Conversations tend to be streamlined in subject content irl, as in there is appropriate subjects to discuss dependent on your environment and who you are with, which seems to be less prevalent on a forum like this, as there are forums which cater to varying interests.
In a colloquial sense, such as often is exhibited on this forum, philosophy basically equates to sharing one's views, which can lead to a lot of talking past one another. However, proper philosophy is based on formulas and methods to reach a conclusion which ought to be sound, consistent, usually logical and display structured reasoning. In that sense, philosophy can lend itself to developing answers or novel understanding. I don't think it helps on this site that philosophy is connected with religion into one forum.
Sorry to go on about forums, but another observation struck me on a previous forum I used to visit. A situation would arise in a particular topic where senior members and others would make their points, and I noticed that any further comments made by anyone else e.g me, were regarded as being unnecessary because the topic was getting too long and should have been closed much earlier. I got the impression that some senior members seemed to delight in being in control of the length a topic should run, and would be prepared to make that perfectly clear. My point being, does it really matter that much after all it's only a forum. But then of course this was the most important thing to them, being in control of lesser mortals like me in a forum. You can't change human nature even in a forum, in fact I think that it's fairly obvious now that forums tend to bring out the best side in human nature, not.
Mine, too Pieceofmyheart. I call everyone Sugar, Darlin', Sweetie.. etc. It's not flirting. It's just Southern Speak.
I think it's very important to use an alias when you're on a forum, as it saves you from any embarrassment when something you post turns out to be completely ridiculous, even though it seemed quite ok at the time of posting. Of course anonymity comes at a price, because you can't show your true self, which in my case has to be a good thing really because I'm a rather odd person who doesn't fit in well in most social situations. But of course odd people can have a field day on a forum, because you can be who you want to be and you don't have to impress anyone. I'm always on the lookout for meeting odd friends on the forum male or female it doesn't matter, so perhaps if you think you're just the right sort of person don't forget to befriend me.
Ok, backchat. i just did. I don't know many of the people on my friend's list anyway, or who some of them are....LOL I like people who are different and not following any gang mentalities. i always did my own thing, too.....

Yep.. Backchat... you have a limit to how many posts you can like in one day. I hit that wall, too. I like people! I love reading the posts.
A lot of times when I post I'll pretend to be Dumbledore. Like, if I want to make points but don't want to get into a heated argument. Then I take the high road and become Dumbledore. I don't know if anybody likes feeling like they're talking to an ancient wizard, or if I manage to actually come across like one, but it works for me. In person I'm not old enough to be Dumbledore yet. But someday, someday...
