Thank you for this thread, it is a fine addition to the HipForums and much appreciated! The thoughts here continue me through my day...
Awareness is the greatest agent for change. If you get the inside right, the outside will fall into place. Primary reality is within; secondary reality without. ~ Eckhart Tolle Stop being tense about the external situations. Once the inside of a person is clean, then the outside automatically becomes all right. ~ Mata Amritanandamayi In the realm of mind, like attracts like. If the soul is peaceful, then it attracts peaceful environment and people around it. ~ Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Set your mind right and all will be right. ~ Nisargadatta Maharaj
It is impossible to commit an unwholesome action—to insult, kill, steal, or rape without generating great agitation in the mind, great craving and aversion. This moment of craving or aversion brings unhappiness now, and more in the future. ~ S.N.Goenka There is no end to the gratification of the senses which only creates greater and greater turmoil, tension, fear and so on; such a living must culminate in mental and physical disorder or in war. ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti The abuse of food, alcohol, or drugs is essentially a material response to a need that isn't really physical at its foundation.. What we are looking for is pure joy rather than mere sensation, or even oblivion of sensation. Addiction is unrecognized spiritual craving. ~ Deepak Chopra Excitement always has an opposite; sooner or later the pendulum swings back to boredom or depression. Excitement depends upon an emotional attachment to something, perhaps a new home or a compliment. Inwardly, you may attach yourself to a daydream or a hope of getting rich. But these excitements have no stability; they wear off. So you are kept in a nervous search for more excitement, which exhausts you. But when you find inner liberty you are free from anxious dependence upon contrived thrills. Then you are happy. You are happy whether or not you get the new home, or whether or not your daydream comes true." ~ Vernon Howard The discovery that peace, happiness and love are ever-present within our own Being, and completely available at every moment of experience, under all conditions, is the most important discovery that anyone can make. ~ Rupert Spira
Thinking of objects, attachment to them is formed in a man. Attachment gives rise to desire and desire (when obstructed) breeds anger. From anger comes delusion which results in loss of memory of the Self. The loss of memory causes destruction of discrimination and from the ruin of discrimination the man perishes. ~ Krishna (BG-2 : 63) The individual who forcibly controls the organs of action, but whose mind rotates around thoughts of sense objects, is said to be a hypocrite, deluding himself. ~ Krishna ( BG 3:6) Evil arises from the senses pursuing sense-objects.Wherefore that individual's knowledge (awareness) is steady whose senses have been restrained from sense-objects in all forms, subjective and objective. ~ Adi Shankaracharya There is attention (awareness) only when the mind is not trapped by an inward or outward idea or object. ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti
When even one virtue becomes our nature, the mind becomes clean and tranquil. Then there is no need to practice meditation; we will automatically be meditating always. ~ Swami Satchidananda Wholesome virtuous behavior progressively leads to the foremost.~ Buddha AN 10.1 If you do right, irrespective of what the other does, it will slow down the (turbulent) mind. ~ Rajini Menon
Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. ~ John C. Maxwell 90% of problems in life arise due to deficiencies in our behavior and attitude. By plugging these deficiencies our life will be happier and more peaceful than now. ~ Mata Amritanandamayi Education is culturing our behavior and attitude. ~ Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
I am going to start quoting your quotes to others... I think these need universal spreading around... like gems they are!
An eye for an eye will leave the whole world blind. ~ Mahatma Gandhi Compassion is all inclusive. Compassion knows no boundaries. Compassion comes with awareness, and awareness breaks all narrow territories.~ Amit Ray All countries in this world are territories of evil. ~ Rama ( Yoga Vasistha) When you call yourself an Indian or a Muslim or a Christian or a European, or anything else, you are being violent. Do you see why it is violent? Because you are separating yourself from the rest of mankind. ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti Kindness and awareness work together. Through awareness we understand the underlying beauty of everything and every being. ~ Amit Ray
Yes, an eye for an eye as a concept was always disturbing to me... for the obvious reason. One evil does not counter another evil. Amit Ray has it better Thanks for the wisdom!
A wise man knows that happiness is real, as it is one's very nature. Unhappiness is unreal as it is inflicted by memory. ~ Sri Sri Ravi Shankar You cannot suffer the past or future because they do not exist. What you are suffering is your memory and your imagination. ~ Osho People don’t realize that now is all there ever is; there is no past or future except as memory or anticipation in your mind. ~ Eckhart Tolle “Past and future are in the mind only – I am now.” ~ Nisargadatta Maharaj Past and future only exist in your memory and your imagination. The only thing that you experience is what is right now. ~ Sadhguru All negativity is caused by an accumulation of psychological time and denial of the present.~ Eckhart Tolle “The present moment is filled with joy and happiness. If you are attentive, you will see it.” ~ Thich Nhat Hanh “While you are walking, smile and be in the here and now, and you will transform that place into paradise.” ~ Thich Nhat Hanh
Life is waiting for you to smile. Our body has the capacity to sustain the vibrations of bliss and peace much longer than negative emotions. That is because positivity is in the centre of our existence.” ~ Sri Sri Ravi Shankar I tell you, deep inside you is a fountain of bliss, a fountain of joy. Deep inside your center core is truth, light, love, there is no guilt there, there is no fear there. Psychologists have never looked deep enough.~Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Yogis are not against pleasure. It is just that they found something much more intense and enduring within themselves. ~ Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev Nearly all mankind is more or less unhappy because nearly all do not know the true Self. Real happiness abides in Self-knowledge alone. All else is fleeting. To know one’s Self is to be blissful always. ~ Ramana Maharshi
i don't know about that self thing, pretty much i experience myself as just a point in space, like a camera, to observe from. but that second to the last one, that's absolutely me, and i make no claim to be any kind of yogi or anything else, although again, not so much within myself as within the diversity of the mineral, non-human and even non-living universe. i sure wish i knew how to not ever be distracted from that first one. i don't agree with the imperial now either, if you don't ever look ahead, you always end up with a roll of the dice, which frequently proves unpleasant.
Always do your best. Be impeccable with your word. Never assume anything. Never take anything personally. Be skeptical, but open to new ideas. -Don Miguel Ruiz
Worried thought prevents practical thought which could prevent worried thought. ~ Vernon Howard Of course there’s such a thing as useful thought, the kind that has nothing to do with keeping the ego going. Practical thought does not cause emotion. It is applied to a purpose: making a plan for a trip, studying a new language, figuring out how to repair something that’s broken. (Of course, the ego can find all kinds of ways to get in an uproar while these episodes of practical thinking are occurring. Like getting mad at the broken thing, or becoming frustrated because you can’t figure out how to fix it. In which case, unconsciousness has taken over. But it isn’t inevitable that it will always do so ). ~ Jan Frazier There is such a thing as useful thought. But that kind of thinking doesn’t have anything to do with ego, with your sense of a self — your hurt feelings, your goals, your belief in what’s right and valuable and necessary. Useful thought has to do with finding a cure for HIV, or figuring out how to replace a broken corner of a roof, or charting a route to a distant city, or learning how to speak a new language. After the mental task is accomplished, you tell the mind to go lie down, and it does. And when you lie down at night, you really, really sleep. ~ Jan Frazier Jan Frazier Teachings – Imagine a life without suffering All true artists, whether they know it or not, create from a place of no-mind, from inner stillness. ~ Eckhart Tolle In the enlightened state, you still use your thinking mind when needed, but in a much more focused and effective way than before. You use it mostly for practical purposes, but you are free of the involuntary internal dialogue, and there is inner stillness. ~ Eckhart Tolle The thinking mind and the ego are the same. In the ordinary body-mind organism mind can be both working mind and thinking mind. In the case of the sage it is only the working mind.~ Ramesh Baleskar Is there an impersonal or functional will that is part of the body-mind mechanism? A concept which I found useful in speaking about this very point is to notionally divide the mind into the working mind and the thinking mind. Thinking mind is a conceptualizing mind, the "me." What is absent after enlightenment is the thinking mind, the "me" distinguishing itself from the other. The conceptualizing thinking mind, the mind which draws upon memories and projects fears, hopes and ambitions: that is absent. The working mind is what remains. ~ Ramesh Baleskar
When the mind is strong, external difficulties stay external – they do not shake me inside and rob me of my stability. The mind stays peaceful, free from sorrow and worry. ~ Dadi Janki No matter what is happening around you, pay attention to making and keeping your inner stability strong. ~ Dadi Janki (Administrative head of Prajapita Brahmakumaris) What gives this kind of stability? You must have seen a tower – to reach so high, it has a deep foundation. You need to become introverted, to go deep inside, and make yourself so strong that even if the whole world fluctuates, you remain stable.~ Dadi Janki Make yourself so strong that even if the whole world fluctuates, you remain stable. ~ Sister Jayanti Kripalani, Prajapita Brahmakumaris The problem is as big as the amount of pain we create. If we are stable, the problem appears to be very small and easy to face. ~ Sister Shivani Verma( Prajapita Brahmakumaris) When we face problems with a cool mind, problems become opportunities. ~ Sister Shivani Verma ( Prajapita Brahmakumaris)
Even a little disturbance of the mind will affect its judgement and efficiency. ~ Swami Chinmayananda Knowledge comes to your mind only if the mind is calm and serene, then knowledge flows easily through the mind to the job in hand. ~ Swami Chinmayananda The average man cannot think clearly, but is ruled by explosions of his emotions. ~ Yogananda Although we have the knowledge at our fingertips, it fails us when needed, if the mind is disturbed. ~ Swami Chinmayananda It is actually a calm mind that can act correctly in the midst of danger. An emotional mind usually errs and exacerbates the situation. ~ Jaggi Vasudev Retire to the center of your being which is calmness. - Yogananda Spirituality is understanding your soul, your mind, your emotions and your intellect. If you are not united with your being, neither can you be intelligent nor can your emotions be refined. The sharpness of mind comes totally when there is calmness within. - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
