it is a perrenial problem of not having sound reasoning skills. There is a lack of cosistency of premise in his belief system upon which he bases all his reasoned arguments. It is a profound waste of the mind of a very intelligent individual.

A gun is a gun is a gun. The proper definition of an "assault weapon" is a light machine gun, as in one that is not crew-served. The term has been co-opted by the anti-gun movement to make a semi-automatic weapon sound more scary. They use such items as a bayonet lug and a collapsible stock, nothing that contributes to the lethality of the gun, to define what they deem an "assault weapon". It's incredibly difficult to buy an actual machine gun in this country. It takes 6 months to a year to pass the background investigation and get approved by the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms), then you have to shell out an incredible amount of money - a fully automatic M-16 goes for about $15,000 USD and I've seen M-60's go for $30,000-$45,000 USD. It's the realm of collectors, not street thugs.

They've also targeted rifles and ignored handguns, claiming an AR-15 is a "machine gun" (absolutely not), despite that fact rifles are used in very few shootings in the US....more people are killed with hammers here than rifles. Ironically they're terrified of small caliber, mid-powered AR-15 but themselves defend large caliber, high powered hunting rifles. They're terrified of a bayonet lug, but have no problem with the fixed bayonet of an SKS. Doesn't make sense, but then again most anti-gun activists don't know anything about guns.

Many of them own guns themselves - Joe Biden, Dianne Feinstein, Gabby Giffords, Mark Kelly, and Michael Bloomberg all own guns. Anti-gun activists such as Oprah Winfrey and Michael Moore employ armed bodyguards - we know because both of their bodyguards were arrested for illegal possession of firearms. Even SARAH BRADY herself, founder of the rabidly anti-gun "Brady Campaign" buys guns for her son. Four Mayors from the organization "Mayors Against Illegal Guns" have been arrested for illegal possession of a firearm. There's a lot of hypocrisy among the "leadership" of the anti-gun movement. It doesn't help when people like Joe Biden release videos claiming he tells his wife that if somebody is trying to break into their house she should take her double-barreled shotgun and "fire two blasts into the air". Not only did he tell her to empty her weapon in the face of an imminent assault, but told her to commit a crime. Discharging a weapon into the air is illegal, and constitutes a felony in many states. In another video he claimed he told her to shoot through the door. That's idiotic, you never shoot through a door not knowing who's on the other side. Their credibility is lacking.

Ironically charges were recently dismissed against a man for discharging a weapon into the air. He used what's now called "The Joe Biden defense". His argument was that Joe Biden said it's OK...so they dropped the charges. It'd be funny if it weren't over something so incredibly reckless as firing a gun into the air - what goes up must come down.

Terminology wise, there's no such thing as a high volume "clip". A "clip" is a feeding device that typically hold 8 rounds and used in a rifle with a fixed ammunition well such as an M1 Garand, SKS, or Mosin-Nagant. They're not used in modern rifles. You're referring to a magazine. Semantics, I know, but should use the correct terminology. The funniest I heard yet from an anti-gunner was "high volume assault magazine banana clip"

As for your statement about gun owners - the truth is that very few people who legally own guns engage in criminal activity. Yes, it happens. It's a big country. There are plenty of examples, but the "criminal" part you mentioned doesn't apply to this group. Drug users, convicted felons, domestic abusers, and those deemed "mentally deficient" by a court of law are barred from gun ownership. It's a felony for them just to touch a gun much less buy one.

Your statement about urban areas - you're more likely to be the victim of a crime in an urban area than in a remote area. Police usually arrive after the crime has been committed, they rarely stop it in progress. There's a saying about things like this, "When seconds count and police are only minutes away".Two of the incidents I mentioned - having a gun pulled on me, and the psycho who pulled a Bowie knife both happened in the inner-city. Neither one was ever captured. The guy with a knife actually hijacked an MBTA bus. We were stuck in a parking lot for two hours. The driver was never able to notify dispatch. We were only freed after a passenger grabbed a lady's umbrella and charged at him, screaming at the top of his lungs and stabbed him in the face. His face was torn up but he got away. This was all over not having a quarter for bus fare. He was ready to kill someone over twenty five cents.

There are flaws to the system - the government won't prosecute prohibited persons who try to buy a gun (approximately 79,000 background checks are rejected each year), police' hands are often tied over dangerous individuals who make threats, and there's a huge black market for illegal guns in inner cities. Just look at Leland Yee - a state Senator from California and probably the most anti-gun politician at the state level. He's in jail awaiting trial for corruption, RICO charges for his involvement with the Triads.....and plotting to smuggle machine guns and shoulder fired rockets into the US from a Muslim separatist group in the Philippines, in exchange for campaign contributions. Not good. Some states do pursue prohibited persons, California sends police to people's houses as soon as they become a prohibited person if they own guns. I don't necessarily approve of their method...they use SWAT teams which in and of itself leads to problems, but a prohibited person is a prohibited person so they lose their guns.

There are over 300 million guns in this country, if your statement was true we'd live in an uninhabited wasteland.

Edited to say I don't know why the text is highlighted. I'm not typing it all again and copy/pasting it didn't help. Sorry if it's a strain on the eyes.

The problem won't be fixed any time soon. If you don't think there are people you should be afraid of you're setting yourself up for disaster. Do you lock your doors at night? Do you walk down unlit streets in the middle of the night in dangerous neighborhoods? Of course you don't. Fear is why you lock your doors, because you know what could happen.

Do I "fear" for my family's safety? Of course I do. I live in the real world where bad things happen. I've already been in three potentially fatal encounters where I was helpless to do anything about it. I owned guns when two of those incidents occurred by the way, but they were at home. If it happens again I'll be prepared. If not, I'll just keep on minding my own business, living my life.

The "gun nuts" comment pretty much nullifies your argument as it's an irrational, emotional response.

FYI - Law in effect as of January 3, 2012

US Code Title 10, Section 311 and 312

    §311. Militia: composition and classes
    (a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.
    (b) The classes of the militia are—
    (1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and
    (2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.

    §312. Militia duty: exemptions
    (a) The following persons are exempt from militia duty:
    (1) The Vice President.
    (2) The judicial and executive officers of the United States, the several States, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands.
    (3) Members of the armed forces, except members who are not on active duty.
    (4) Customhouse clerks.
    (5) Persons employed by the United States in the transmission of mail.
    (6) Workmen employed in armories, arsenals, and naval shipyards of the United States.
    (7) Pilots on navigable waters.
    (8) Mariners in the sea service of a citizen of, or a merchant in, the United States.

    (b) A person who claims exemption because of religious belief is exempt from militia duty in a combatant capacity, if the conscientious holding of that belief is established under such regulations as the President may prescribe. However, such a person is not exempt from militia duty that the President determines to be noncombatant.

Federal Assault Weapons ban from 1994 - 2004. Big spike in gun related deaths. The trend reversed itself when the bill expired. Interesting

I find it amusing that graphic comes from Bloomberg of all places.

No, I'm saying I live in the real world where bad things happen, not in the land of gumdrops and lollipops.

Been shooting since I was 7. Never killed anybody. Been in three life threatening encounters. Home has been robbed half a dozen times. My father was stabbed. He had a gun, shot the guy in thew head. The idiot lived and was sentenced to 10 years in prison for attempted murder. Some people never learn you don't bring a knife to a gun fight, especially when the guy you stab is a cop wearing a gun.

    Something else to consider...

Suicides by gun accounted for about six of every 10 firearm deaths in 2010 and just over half of all suicides, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

    SouthPaw,
I tried to quote you but you used a white background for your text and screwed everything up, so here's my reply, you'll have to figure out which sections I am referring to.

There are different legal definitions of what an assault weapon is depending on the state or local jurisdiction.
Here are some examples, note that pistols and single shot weapons are included in some areas:

I don't believe any of the people you mentioned advocate a complete ban on guns, but I would have to research each one. If they own guns they aren't against gun, but they may be in favor of more regulation.

I know what a magazine is, I was using the vernacular term, (one that everyone understands).

I wasn't commenting on the numbers, I was only pointing out that criminals use guns also and criminals with guns need to be "feared". Just because they are barred from using them doesn't mean they won't. You had stated that we need not fear people with guns, I pointed out that we do need to fear some of them.

I understand, but high density areas are inherently more dangerous when guns are discharged and police aid is more readily available. I know about murders that can happen a block away from a police station.

There are flaws in every system, I agree.

You are referring to Code based upon the Militia Act of 1903 I believe:

This primarily addressed the National Guard and allowed the Federal government to gain control over State militias.

Yeah maybe for a while, but if you have a gun big enough to be meaningful, it just gets to be a pain in the ass. Same goes with concealed carry.
Besides, in a high stress situation, all your mental energy goes to getting that gun and you'll chance overlooking quicker solutions to avoiding immediate danger. An aggressive attacker will likely get to you before you can even get to your gun.

You don't think they lived out their entire lives and never saw a single technological development in anything? Technology always has room for improvement in everything man made. Wouldn't you think a true innovator like Ben Franklin, if not the rest of 'em, would understand that at the very least.

I understand what you're saying. Sorry for the white text. The advanced editor didn't show any formatting on my text so couldn't get rid of it.

The term "assault weapon", in regards to semi-automatic weapons, was fabricated by the Brady Campaign in their quest to ban guns. After Clinton signed the Federal AWB ("B" as in "Ban") in 1994 they bragged about pushing the term, and bragged about repeatedly referring to semi-automatic rifles as machine guns to scare people. They were gloating. Twenty years later you'd be amazed how many people still think AR-15's are machine guns....and that you can buy a machine gun at WalMart!

Dianne Feinstein, Michael Bloomberg, and Sarah Brady have indeed called for gun bans. During the anti-gun push after Sandy Hook Feinstein kept repeating "Nobody is trying to take your guns" while she simultaneously introduced legislation calling for forced confiscation. Old news. She's been playing this game since she got to the Senate.

"If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the Unites States for an out-right ban, picking up every one of them...'Mr. and Mrs. America, turn them all in', I would have done it" - Dianne Feinstein on 60 Minutes, Feb 5, 1995

"I will pick the time and the place" - Dianne Feinstein, multiple times throughout the 1990's

"I'm the guy who wrote the Assault Weapons Ban" - Joe Biden

"I wrote the assault weapons ban that was the law of the land for a decade" - Dianne Feinstein

"I don't believe people should be allowed to own guns" - Barack Obama at University of Chicago

"Pistols are different than assault weapons because a pistol you have to pull the trigger every time. An assault weapon goes B-r-r-r-r" - Michael Bloomberg trying to claim semi-automatic rifles are machine guns as he called for a gun ban in 2012. He also wants to make gun trafficking, which is already illegal....illegal. I guess he wants to make it "illegaler"

"Our main agenda is to have ALL guns banned" - Sarah Brady

"I don't believe gun owners have rights" - Sarah Brady

Yeah, I know it's limited in scope and I didn't say it allowed ownership of any gun. I was just showing that it's still law.

It's all moot anyway. The Supreme Court ruled in 2008 we have the individual right to keep and bear arms (DC v. Heller), and again in 2010 when they ruled our individual right to keep and bear arms is incorporated by the 14th Amendment so can't be taken away by the states (McDonald v. Chicago).

You really want to compare yourself with a basket case like Russia? Please have you no pride no aspirations? I’ve met people that have been there after the wall came down and it was a badness fuelled by vodka and desperation, really if you have to look to Russia to make you feel better then you truly are in a bad way.

Oh so that's OK then, who cares about suicides and as to those gang members the more that die the merrier?

According to the FBI virtually all the guns in criminal hands were once purchased legally but then sold on or stolen.
