A 20 year old man was found dead inside his parked car this morning. The driver's window was shot out. His family identified him to USA Today. Police haven't said how he died, etc. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/body-found-violent-ferguson-protests-identified-article-1.2023758
Tonight, protesters blocked I-75 South in Atlanta, briefly. That took nuts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2il12x97v4&feature=youtu.be
In some ways, I have tried to explain (not justify) the rioters actions but you can't really argue with this guys points and I've also made a few of those points myself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpsQwl_19M4
All of that in the video being said, I still think there is a problem. When I was a kid in Chicago in the 80's, we used to get harassed by the cops all the time. I vividly remember walking home from school or just walking to a friends house and having the cops stop us, put our hands on the hood of the police car and search us, maybe take us to the precinct and interrogate us....for no reason at all. If you lipped off, they would smack you around, threaten to kick your ass, etc. I once even had a cop tell me he would take his gun off and let his partner hold it If I wanted to fight him. I didn't want to fight him. I just wanted to walk home. I am white. I can only imagine what a bunch of pricks they can be to the black guys. Now I live in an Iowa city and have been here for a long time but I still see the differences in how people are treated. I drive a nice car with very dark tinted windows...never had a problem. My buddy drives a kind of crappy car with lighter tint....get's pulled over for it. Some friends and I were in the capital a while back and they (not me) were walking down the street downtown openly drinking wine. The cops drove by and looked right at us.....and kept driving. They didn't do a thing. Nothing. If we had been anyone besides fairly well-dressed middle aged white people I think they would have messed with us. They even made eye contact with us as they drove right on by. In my town there is a brewery where a lot of the local business owners, city council people, etc go. Maybe a few hippy and redneck types stop in but I've never seen a minority person in there. I'm friends with the owner and he once told me that nobody leaving there ever gets a DUI. They just have to say that they were drinking there and they get followed home by the cops. I asked him why that was. He said "We have an arrangement." So I realize that I benefit from some of those things but....it's still fucked up that things are that way and the people on the other end of this shit have a right to be pissed about it. It really is not fair that it's like that. At least in Chicago they seem to be willing to fuck everyone's civil rights over on some level.
On one of the busiest traffic days of the year....................... BOSTON (CBS) – Nearly 1,500 protesters of the grand jury decision in Ferguson, Missouri have blocked access to Route 93 in Boston. State Police and Boston Police have established a line blocking the protesters on the Mass. Ave Connector. Police say they are aware the protesters may try to walk on to the highway to disrupt traffic. All available State Police units in Boston area are responding. In Providence, RI Tuesday night, a protest spilled onto I-95, forcing both sides of the highway to temporarily shut down. So far the protest in Boston has been peaceful, but State Police say arrests have been made. The march began at the Dudley Square police station at 7 p.m. Hotwater
I just don't believe it. Every time I check back it's worse. All the normally sane members who I normally like, agreeing with a few especially nasty individuals we generally try to keep in the closet when company comes over. Almost all the responses here are entirely devoid of logic, any understanding of the original situation with wilson and brown, any understanding of the appropriate relationship between citizenry and law enforcement or any concept of proportional response, any understanding of the sociopolitical and socioeconomic situations that a large part of this country deals with, etc. Oh, and most replies here seem to be absolutely 100% racist - if you are talking about "animals", you need to check yourself realllllllly carefully. The internalized prejudices and opinions and assumptions and generalizations and dislikes here are fucking horrifying. It's really not hard to condemn looting without being a racist who loves being subjugated by murderous powertripping jackbooted thugs, you all should try it some time.
I really hope that you aren't including me in that because I feel like I've tried to be pretty balanced about this topic and haven't said anything way over the top.
Every town is a little different, and I don't mean just the police. North Carolina has seven cities with more than 100,000 population, and I've spent significant time in the downtown areas of five of the seven. The only one where most of the black people downtown seem to be angry and confrontational most of the time is Greensboro. It has a long history of poor race relations. Why can't they get it right? I don't know. It's really hard to say how another city should handle their controversies, if you haven't been living there and keeping up with the unfolding stories over a period of years. The context matters.
