Sitting around this holiday morn, random thoughts come to mind. I don't know if it's common knowledge or not but the Oak Street House was the home of Dianne DePrima and the Poet's Press. At one time, it housed JACK KEROUAC, Alan Ginsberg and many of the Beats.

I'm trying to remember the name of the guy who owned it in the 70's . I know Leo Ron and I used Meg to do a moving job for him.

Does anyone know what happened to the family's lawyer Tony Serra?

    Remembering:

When Mouse man went up on the pole to reconnect our power after PG& E shut it off (That Navy training came in handy;didn't it?).
The time we poured concrete into the water meter hole so they couldn't shut that off.
Selling Xmas trees in the Lucky parking lot.
    "Touch" football with the cops.
Driving over a cliff with Black Daryl and ending up at John Phillips house after playing a gig near Mt Tam.
Sit down dinners with the family after a hard days work.
Stringing popcorn for the tree in the front room at Oak Street.
The powerful OM at the start of a famly meeting.

And throughout it all, the hope that we were making something better and more loving then the straight world that surrounded us.

    Peace out.
    Love
    ZEV

I know a lot of the houses were unsettled estates, uninhabited for for many years. I believe Underhouse was such a place. When the BPs lived uptop they would come and ask for rent when I was living in the basement flat before I joined GE. When the raid of 71 went down the laws took out the BPs, no one ever came down and ask for rent again. Shortly after that I moved into underhouse. The eletricity, gas and water was illegal and I was told by the CPS that it was a condemed building.

It's all high dollar now, they rentovated the whole of Haigh Dist. Only a few brothers and sisters remain. They have gatherings now n then, but mostly media hyped and plastic. Run out and buy the latest hippie fashion and be a hippie for a day, type stuff.

Where has the time gone, it has slipped afar. How young and beautiful we were in our glory. Each of us like a shinning star, full of hopes and dreams and fanciful sceams, becoming who we are.

What roads of wonder we have traveled, looking for the way, to bring everyone together just so we could say. Stand up and be counted, fight on another day. Your the only one that can so make the change today.

In this coming New Year, it's really up to you, to be a better person and do all that you can do. We're grown into our parents places as they fade away, looking to our children now to make a better way.

They have filled our spots, these young ones, that we brought onto the Earth. We have taught them to be good folks and gave them a wide birth. We can only hope they listened and leraned from our mistakes. I know we make quiet a few or my name aint Nailcakes.

What I am saying here today, is we did what we could. We were Hippie Pinoneers blazing through the wood. We left our mark on scociety, saying no more war, we brought a message of love and peace, we spread it to every shore.

What people do with the message is really up to them, they can either get on board or learn how to swim. The water she's a rizing, but still they do not see a livesaver has been thrown. It was cast once before and we grabed it on our own.

We came and made a difference, in the world today. The ones that did are still doing, in their little way, to teach the children why and what we came to say. In hopes they carry on what we tried to do.

So there you are, you have it. My dittie for today, I hope it brings you hope and faith with the coming year

    Happy New Year Family.

    Brightest Blessings

Coming as it did at the end of a bad year (the exception being my virtual reconnection to the family) your thought are just what I needed to bring back up for the New Year. Hopefully we can have a physical reunion of the remaining family members and party hearty like we did in the days of hope and expectation. Happy Chrisnukahkwanromoli and a happy New year.
    Peace out.
    ZEV

PS; I recently came across some photos of myself from 1971 and `1973. I'm trying to have them scanned in so I can post them and perhaps revive some memories.

Mouseman has a GE reunion every year @ Woodpecker. I haven't had a chance to go.. but I did call and talk to a few of the bros, for a minute. I talked to Wild Bill, he has moved to Istanbol(sp). He likes it very much but misses family and tradition.

Reconnecting brings it all back home. It gives us a chance to see where we started and how far we have come. Each step we took paved the way for a bridge to common ground, where all are equal under the sun.

It's not about who has more stuff, it's about the stuff inside us.

Brightest Blessings in the coming New Year

Zev!!!.. I remember you now ... How young and full of life we were back then..that was right across from where I lived... my my.. I didn't think I'd ever see White House again... it's what I saw everyday when I opened the front door for yrs.

On the first of every month you would see all the Ladys in all their splender, sitiing on the front stoop wating for the mailman to bring the checks that our rich uncle Sam would send us.

We would greet him and usher him to the mailboxs singing and dancing with glee. I think he was the most loved person on the block, I'd never seen anyone else so gloriously welcomed..except when someone didn't get their check or food stamps from dear ole uncle..then he was scum...lol.

I remember how wonderful it was when we would have concerts in the Panhandle, we would make bananna bread and other taste tantilizing treats and pass them out.. like them special brownnies and that delicious punch with them weird floatie things in it..

I member when BB&THC came and brought a pound of Christmas Snow up top in White House. The house vibrated three feet off the ground for weeks and we all had Betty Davis Eyes...lol..

I think most of all it was the Call To Arms that struck me most.. with the VN war raging and a battle field of a different nature taking place on the streets of the cities, it was a war against the establishment. A revelution.. We wanted change, we wanted to live a different lifestyle. WE wanted FREEDOM!! We wanted our indivdualty back..we didn't want to clonealized.

WE didn't want our food, water and air tamper with. We wanted equail pay for equail work, we wanted to teach our children about love, not war.

They wanted us dead.. can you imagain that.. I was glad when Reagan died.. even after all this time, I was glad.. somehow satisfied with his demise. And I was glad that he suffered so long. I hope it was his own guilt that caused his misery.

He killed so many of us, us young kids just teenager, but they wanted us to die. It was so very scary at times. You could feel it in the air.. so thick you could reach out and touch it. Really.. the air would change around you and the vibes so heavy it would make the hair stand up on the back of your neck.

What they taught in school was: we left England bc we wanted freedom to worship and live as we pleased.. to own our own land and raise our families to be good folks and to harm none. Strange thing is, when we exersized our rights we are slaughtered.

Some people may not believe it.. but I saw it for myself.. I saw them bomb one of our houses full of women and children.. I saw them stop the fire dept from putting out the flames. They sneered as they watched it burn.

I had been bashed with billie clubs before and harrassed.. but this was pure evil.. hatered in the raw. Why.. we just wanted to be left alone.. we were not out to harm, kill or do dastredly deeds. The must have been awfully scared of us to want to anilalate us and our babies.

I remember one bust on Hiaght Street, there above Love Burgers in 70.. I was staying with some folks, that had a2 yr old and Jomie was a baby.

The Law Dogs came pounding on the door of the flat we were in and the baby bed was close to the door. I ran and tried to protect the 2 yr old from the door when it came crashing down. I was yelling.. no.. no.. the babies.. they were all over me, beating me to the ground, kicking my ribs in.. They had the other people up against the wall as they pounded me.

When finaly I was laying in a bloody heap on the floor the draged me off to City Prison. I was in jail with three broken ribs a black eye and a busted lip. I had done nothing wrong. In fact they were at the wrong door. They must have felt I was a huge threat to them standing there 20 yrs old, 5'2 and 110 lbs, a weaponless female against about 5 of them. After a few daze they turned me loose with no explination.

Bill and Patty took care of me n Jomie till I was well enough to travel.. I want back to so cail for a couple of months after that to heal. When I came back, I stayed with Bill and Patty in the bottom flat on Cole and Oak facing the Panhandle. I moved to underhouse shortly after that.

Thanks for posting your pic Zev.. so many memories come flooding in.

    Bright Blessings

    Cakes;
I hope it brought more good than bad memories and I'm glad you now recognize me. Every time I go to the forum more and more memories, faces, & names come to mind. Sometimes I remember faces (and bodies) and can't remenber names: Maybe I never got one. Sometimes names come to mind and the faces are missing. Except for my fight with Kid most if my memories are good ones. Sometimes ther was a bit too much gang macho but most of the time the vibe was good. You have to keep the bad mmories in the back of your mind to keep you careful of making the same mistakes but you keep the good memories up front to make life worth living and help make new good memories.
    Peace Out
Love ZEV (or as I used to spell it Zih-Ave)

I believe he was married to a Lauren. He was a plumber from either New York or New Jersey and I remember when he decided to move to Canyonville. In Mouseman's words.
"A whole lot of folks have not yet been located and too many have passed over; Herman is one of them. He died quite some time ago (on his birthday). Many of the brothers & sisters were there to send him off."

He was a nice guy, a brother and a good friend. If you needed him he was there and down.

    Peace

Sad to hear of Herman's( herman de plumber ) passing.. he will be missed.. Herman was a bright shinning star while he was here, always had a smile and a good word for every one. I remember he would walk into a river and pull out a huge salmon all pink and shinny bare handed, grinning at his prize as he held it up. (s)
