Some grocery stores are near and dear to us. They might have been the place where our mothers shopped. Or they might be local. When I was growing up, my mom collected S&H Green Stamps which were dispensed at Finast Supermarket. Other favorites were Dan's Supreme, the A&P, and Daitch Shopwell.
I live in the west. When I was a San Franciscan, the stores were So-Lo, Cala Foods, Bell Market, and Safeway. I was never well off enough to shop at the tiny epicure shops and I seldom patronized the corner bodega type stores because they generally did not carry the freshest merchandise.
These days I get to enjoy upscale shopping at Trader Joe's and Sprouts. Yet one of my staple sources is ALDI. Sometimes they just have a half to a dozen products that resonate with me; 12 slices of cheese, tuna and crackers in a box, a can of baked beans, cereal, berries. This, that, or the other.
It's a strange sort of life with odd stores like that. There is another one in the neighborhood called GROCERY OUTLET Bargain Market. That place has almost nothing to my liking, yet I still stroll down the aisles in search of something that might strike my fancy. The disappointment of selections is overwhelming.
But, as I age I have come to realize that the shelves don't need to be replenished with any great frequency. ALDI seems to cover most of my essentials.
We'll see how long this lasts.
