Great news for the Indigenous peoples of the USA...the Department of Justice ruled this year that they are allowed to grow and sell cannabis, if the state their reservation is located within allows it.leaf For Hip

The U.S. Department of Justice is addressing Indian tribes' request for guidance on the growing and selling of marijuana on Indian land after multiple states have moved to legalize the plant's use in recent years. According to a memorandum, the DOJ issued a policy statement on the enforcement of the Controlled Substance Act saying tribes can grow and sell marijuana on their lands as long as they follow the same federal conditions set for states that have legalized it.

However, some tribal leaders are reluctant to embrace the new policy. Don Gentry, chairman of the Klamath Tribes in Oregon stated the following:

"We have an alcohol- and drug-free policy at work. It would just not be something we would be looking for into the future."

Imagine the brand names that could come from this, and perhaps those Indian statues once found being used for advertising purposes will come back in style?

Now when will they allow the rest of us to do the same? Everywhere? When?!

Does this mean you'll be able to smoke a joint at your local casino if you live in America now?

Unlikely. The few states allowing have some serious limitations, and several tribes will still say no.
Some tribes actively harass growers, such as the Yurok, deep in the emerald triangle.

Add to that the fact that some tribes' casinos are not actually on their land, just run under their auspices, and it's a recipe for long, slow court cases.

Take Colorado as an example. State level legal recreational marijuana. Two reservations in the far southwest of the state. Almost abutting other tribes. It's desert, in the rainfall sense, but not a Saharan sort of desert. I doubt the Tribes would support a pot shop simply because their land is rocked with drug and alcohol problems already, on and off Rez.

Huh. If Rosebud and Pine Ridge were to get state-exclusive grow and sales rights (not likely given they are in South Dakot) they could build an industry that would pull most of the Rez out of poverty. It's central to a lot of the country, surrounded by non pot states.

If an American citizen, for example has Indian heritage, say...four generations back, would I qualify as an Indian, thus getting to go legal? hehe

Enrolled, living on the Rez, yeah, maybe. If your tribe decided to go for it.

I must say it is very surprising to me that all Native Americans on the rez are not embracing the idea of growing and selling marijuana.  I am aware of the constant struggle they have against alcohol and drug abuse.

However, I didn't see weed sales as being something they would associate with their problems...since it is a plant and actually nothing is required to do to this plant to "use" it...plant it, pick/harvest it, use it - smoking or make edibles.  Plus they would or could make money!

With alcohol and all other drugs there must be some processing in order to use it.

Like I said, I'm very surprised.

I am going to admit that it certainly seems everything is better or more progressive in Canada.  Maybe being surrounded by freezing cold and snow so much of the year has something to do with it (probably not :D )...but for whatever reason, Canada seems to have it much much better than down here in the states.   People get along better, no diaper wearing liars for your PM.

Even the rez(es) up there aren't bickering about weed.

good grief I would think this would be ONE thing they could all agree on here in the states...looks like I was wrong, once again.  smh

just returned...noticed a second dispensary sign which I will check out next time....I asked buddy at the store and he said they are a competing store...not affiliated

today they had at least 15 strains....all in jars for checking out and they just installed an industrial style magnifying glass on the counter for close-ups...they sell other things too like oils and edibles and several kinds of hash....I never get the concentrates though....out of my pay grade :)
