I didn't know that I was going to have a van until the moment it actually happened. I didn't have any money saved or even a driver's license. I was in a pawn shop talking to the owner Joe, which I did almost every Saturday morning, when it happened. A guy walked into the shop and said, "Anyone wanna buy that van that's parked outside? I need $350 to keep my Camaro from getting repossessed."

Joe looked at me and asked, "You want that van?" I told him that I didn't have anywhere near $350. He said he'd loan it to me.

BAM!!! I had the first part of my childhood dream just like that.

That's probably in my top 3 favorites of your stories. Man, you gotta write a book.

People keep saying that. I've got bits and pieces of story, but basically, I'm just too lazy to ever sit down and really attempt to put them all together.

Two Dogs,
Just read your thread, too much time in front of a computer but it was worth it, and I love it that so many people are jazzed by this topic. Not for everyone of course, but we should all strive to find unexpected freedom in our lives. Whether it's living in a van, or whatever. Don't let others set limits for you. And thanks for starting such an interesting thread, it makes me happy to see all the folks who have gotten into it. Peace to you!

Hey TwoDogs that is an impressive lifestyle you have sorted out in the desert. I've toyed with a similiar idea here in the East, I'm a pretty successful treasure hunter myself, but have been doing it with a truck and tent. I'd like to pick your brain for information, and experience in this lifestyle. Many of us are looking for answers to shelter, transportation, and bread problems. Maybe you should consider doing a blog here or something where we could all benefit from your experience. Anyway, congratulations on a successful lifestyle on the edge of the Establishment, and continued good luck!

Peace right back atcha! You're right about it not being for everyone. I think that one has to be REALLY lazy, but at the same time have the energy to shape his/her world in the way that suits them. Someone could certainly own or rent a place and still shape their world to suit.

I wandered this world for a long time with no plan, rhyme or reason...just a desire to self-medicate and crawl as far from reality as possible. There were an amazing string of "coincidences" that led me away from the substances, toward clarity and a simple plan. I've reaped the benefits since. It's truly strange how someone that had spent half his life always being in the wrong place at the wrong time could suddenly always be in the right place at the right time. It blows me away to look back on the path to the present.

Pick my brain. Unfortunately, I'm not around a computer all that much. But...pick away anyway...sooner or later I'll respond.
