well i havent worked since monday and boss called this morning and said take the rest of the week off..

he also said things have gotten "really bad" and there having a meeting today to "decide what they are going to do".

i really dont see how they can keep the company open without massive layoffs.im not sure they can even do it with massive layoffs.

its kinda OK.. ive been resolving myself that this was inevitable for months now.ive been saving as much as i can,we have plenty of preps and a very short list of essentials left to aquire.

i expect to be out of work no less than 6 months and to be honest 18 months(i work construction) sounds more like what we are facing.if this happens i will cash in my 401k,pay my house note off and my 1 other small bill and that should leave enough savings for at least 18 months, and thats not counting the 9 months of unemployment i will be eligible for..

still, ive been with the same company for 20 years and 11 months.ive never been unemployed except by choice for more than a couple days since i was 15.this is going to be a strange new experience.

we have plans to expand the gardens over the winter and sell produce next season for extra income. i have other ideas for a little extra income as well that could wind up paying our bills without having to worry about getting a "real job" ever again, but only time will tell how that all pans out.

ive said september was going to be the month it all fell to shit for months now. i just didnt expect it to begin with losing my job..

i hope everyone apreciates the job they have and i hope they are able to keep it through the hard times that are falling upon this country and the world..

no real point to this,,just wrapping my head around the situation..

buckle up kids, its all down hill from here...

I'm really sorry to hear about that HHB. The contruction business in this ecomony right now is absolutely brutal.

My husband is an estimator/contract sales manager and he has seen the company lay off so many workers, due to lack of work basically. Not a lot of building going on right now. No funds to do it! Thankfully, with my husband's position, he's the only one that is does the estimating in the company, so they can't lose him, but believe me, it seems like so many businesses are majorly struggling right now and having to let go of their workers. I know my husband's company is doing halfway decent at the moment only because he landed them several big jobs, but if it weren't for that, I know they wouldn't be in very good shape. Come the colder weather they'll be in another slump for quite some time.

I hope things work out for you...

yeah, he just called and they are doing payroll today instead of tomorrow.. dont look to good..

they are/were? a pretty big company with well established contracts.when times were good the company was turning over over a million dollars a week. i just dont see them being able to down size and make it work the way the companies set up. i am betting there going to cut there losses and sell there contracts and inventory to the highest bidder..

from everything i have read we havent even began to see bottom.they say commercial construction is on its way down now.
people dont realize how much the construction crash is going to decimate the rest of the economy.. i fear they will before winter is over..

thats not the half of it though, most experts are saying flat out our entire banking system is insolvent.hell look what warren buffet did yesterday.. its comin folks...

    Sorry to hear it HHB

I just finished a big project I have been working on for 6 months today. I have saved a lot and have 3 and a half months of pay still to bill, but I have an odd feeling this morning, maybe something similar

i thank the omnipotent one that i bought into the conspiracy theorists and there prediction that september would be the month we would see how bad it really is.. we have spent the last year preparing as much as possible for this.

theres going to have to be some tough decisions made here in the coming weeks if i am indeed unemployed, but i think we will make it through without getting behind on property tax or having to sell the property outright..

i didn't have an opportunity to prepare because i was barely making it with my job. oh well, the important thing is that we are surviving and we're still enjoying our lives. :)

cant be that bad,you still have internet.. or are you at the library?

thats going to be one of our "tough decisions". whether to drop the landline and internet and go just with the prepaid cell phone..
problem with that is with gas at 3.59 a gallon thats over 7 bucks for a round trip to the library and we have no cell service here at the house. we would have to walk to the top of the mountain to use the phone or check messages..
but it would save us 90 bucks a month...

i pay for internet because it saves me money in a number of ways. i also use an internet phone which covers most of it. i have had to do without it for periods of time, but i found it really paid to keep it...and it's bad enough that i have to get about half our food at food banks...so i don't take the expense lightly.

well thankfully food will never be a issue here. all the same,i dont see how i will be able to justify it here if i lose my job..
we are on a package deal now dsl, buncha long distance included yadda yadda. we will see how far we can drop it down by goin dial up and cuttin all the other bullshit out..

i dunno,,i dont even know for sure if im out of work yet..
but like i said,,it aint looking good...

damn, Hippie, i am sorry to hear that what you expected actually happened. I know you and Dilli are always very prepared for this type of thing. You have been planning for months from the sound of some of your posts.

I was hoping this wouldnt happen.

Fortunately, there will always be crime and divorce so at this time, my job is fairly safe. I will say though it has been a really slow month for us so far.

yeah even in the great depression unemployment peaked at 25%.
i think no matter what folks will still have jobs.

the question is will there be a system left in place to pay them..

Well on one hand I'm sorry to read this HHB... OTOH I suspect that you're prepared and would be the last to wallow in self pity so with your plans for the road ahead I imagine you'll make the best of the situation and may be in a place down the road where you'll look back and see the layoff as the best thing that could have happened. Would it be appropriate to be sorry about that? I have the sense that both you and dilli are equal to what life has in store and isn't it life's tests and trials that define who we are?

oh no doubt,if tomorrow i find out my worst fears have been realized i have no choice but to move on,and i know we will be fine.
my only real issue is what a creature of habit ive become and now it will be time to grow a whole new routine from scratch..

dilli is a great task master so i know she will be of great help to me there..

my only other issue is keeping our head above water,i hate to think that i would have to exhaust our rainy day fund.but i know we can make it through without touching it on unemployment alone if it turns out i am laid off. that gives me nine months to find something else,or 9 months for dilli and i to expand the gardens enough to eek out a living selling produce..

i would much rather get a call tomorrow saying i still have a job though...

Well HHB,it sounds and always sounded like you folks are more prepared than most.Think of all the folks that are a couple paychecks away from the street. Some changes we are ready for and some just pop up and we have to adjust.I think y'all will be fine.I was born in '39,so I have seen things ebb and flow in differant ways, but I swear I never thought the greedy immoral ones could fuck this country up so bad.Fortunately for me,people still need their roofs done,'cause as I always say,if you don't have a decent roof, you soon won't have much of a house.Like Stinkfoot said, this could turn out to be the best thing that could happen.-----------scratcho

I think that a depression could be beneficial in ways. Maybe it would force the government to reallocate funds and reprioritize spending when it comes to some of these decades long policies that have accomplished the opposite of their intended purpose.

Anyway man, I hope it all works out well for you. Where I am right now the economy seems to be not as affected as the rest of the country, although the housing boom has slowed immensely. You used to drive by 7-11 and see crowds of illegals waiting for contractors. Now you don't see that. Other than that, and all the SUVs being replaced with priuses, this place is the same ratrace it was 5 years ago.

Right now I am looking for a place to live in an area that is much less economically..dynamic. But fortunately all my tools are there already and I can start fixing cars asap. One positive thing about that trade.. as long as people drive cars I have work.

That sucks but you guys sound like you are better prepared then most people. So many people I know are over extended and a pay check away from losing the roof over their heads.

The construction industry is almost nothing here in Colorado right now the price of gas is destroying the way of life in rural communities.

I really think the American way of life is going to change with the gas prices so many people have built a life that depends on cheap gas. It’s over..

But I think you guys will come out fine you always seem a few steps a head of the game.
