i just got fabulous muscles and la foret. the two latest. they're very...shocking? it's definitely got morrissey appeal. interesting arrangments are the main appeal for me. i'd love to see them live. i like the songs 'crank heart,' 'muppet face,' 'pox.' anyone else?
Hey, that's awesome. Do you think fabulous Muscles is better than La Foret? I haven't gotten around to getting Fabulous Muscles, but I'd love to know how it is.
i like la foret more. it's low-key. my thing with experimental acts: i like their more accessible material. see xiu xiu, animal collective, zappa, can, etc.
I already own albums by them, minus Zappa. Haha, stupid suggestion, but if you love experimental/prog rock, check out the Mars Volta: Frances The Mute. Also Indian Jewerly, XBXRX and Intelligence. I'd also say Below The Sea, if you're into Godspeed! you Black Emperor.
i really dislike mars volta. half because some friends ruined any chance i'd have of liking them and half because they sound like fucking rush. i don't mean to be rude, but that's how i feel. never heard godspeed, heard a lot about them, though. i quite like mogwai and tortoise. but the creativity in the underground right now is quite inspiring. so many people on these forums lament about 'the death of meaningful music' and that's just flat-out not true. not only is there good, challenging music being put out every week (everything mentioned plus antony, fiery furnaces, etc), but it's HARDLY limited to rock and roll. hell, even commercial rap, to me, has more meaning than, say, the mamas and the papas or donovan. but i'm in memphis, so i'm kind of biased on that last statement (we're all VERY proud of three six). scandinavia can't stop putting out good pseudo-psychadelia, folk and electronica. scotland's got baroque pop on lock-down. japan's bands are crazy and fun. canada rules indie rock (new pornos, arcade fire) and the u.s. musical community is so fucking vibrant (u.g. rock, diy shit, hiphop, sufjan). oh, rants. i've been wanting to write that for awhile.
Scandanavia, hm? Isn't Dungen from there, that's a band worth checking out. But you know, I agree, a lot of the people on this forum, mainly on the other sections, do complain about the death of rock and how music is rock bottom. Personally, I think it's been great since 2000 and it's just spitting out more and more talent out there. These talented undergrounds bands are getting pretty fucking huge, so much that I don't even know if you can call it underground anymore. But really, I think the Indie movements just getting better and better, fuck Pinback and Pavement.
no pavement? ahhh. crooked rain's mah shit. haven't heard much yo la tengo. on a side note- my roomates and I are throwing a dance party and we perfected the playlist. for instance, on shuffle, we have jay z, then x, 'whoop there it is,' parliament, new order, marvin gaye, juvenile, etc.. while there's not much good local music, everyone here's pretty eclectic and music-loving. anyone else in this forum? thoughts?
