I heard about the policy at my last job, whereby in signing the contract for employment the employee was to not trash-talk the company in any way on any social networking sites. If the employee was caught, it was grounds for immediate termination. I also heard that some companies were going the route of demanding their employee networking site information in order to keep tabs on them, which I consider a gross infringement. Would you sign the contract for a job, knowing that they would be tracking you online, and would you give the company your online information? Personally, I have a fake Facebook page set up as a contingency just in case.
I would. I only have Facebook as social networking site, and I don't really post much. It wouldn't be a big deal for me. Fb is just FB.
That is none of their business. I would not give it to them and would not work there. I don't have anything to hide, but it is still none of their business.
No, that sounds very much like a violation of my rights. Next they will want a camera in my bedroom to make sure I only do it missionary style. I have no problem signing a paper that says I have read and understand the policies, but that's where it ends. What I do at home is my business. If I am stupid enough to violate work policies and get caught, fire me.
I have signed such a contract with a trash talk policy that wasn't focussed on social media but just in general at the end of last january. My jobgiver and I have parted since then and I trash talked all I wanted last friday in a public place. My online trashtalking is not to be found under my own name. So yeah, I would sign that if I want that job but I would not act upon it if I feel so.
No, I would not. Where do you work, Maelstrom? If you don't feel comfortable saying the name of the company, then what line of work are you in?
I used to work there. No longer. It was the second time I worked for the company, thinking perhaps the neighborhood market store might be different than the average corporate super center. The place I worked was Wal-Mart.
I'm going to be completely honest here. Right now I'm not in much position to turn down any sort of job offer that pays remotely close to what I was making when I was laid off. If I had a choice in the matter and there were other offers on the table, then I wouldn't take a job that would be tracking me online, but otherwise, I, too, would make a fake profile and start immediately cleaning up and hiding my other online profiles.
Walmart is fucking horrible to their employees. I would never work there, regardless of how badly I needed a job.
Wal-Mart treated my roommate a hell of a lot better than I was treated at my job at the time he lived here. It really isn't saying much, but I put up with worse for years, so I don't see how or why Wal-Mart would be any different. That being said, I'm really trying to find a job in an environment that doesn't have a big impersonal corporation behind it. It's probably an impossible dream, but if I find that job, I'll let you guys know. For now I'm just trying to become self-employed.
yeah, i'd say it depends on how desperate i am for a job. if i absolutely need to start working immediately, i could always do what they want me to and just keep searching for a better job while working there. i don't remember for sure, but when the whole companies-asking-for-facebook-passwords thing first came out, i think i read somewhere that it's illegal to require employees to give out that information. of course, if you refuse to sign they could always find another reason to fire you. i wouldn't really have a problem signing that i won't trash talk the company. i think it's pretty safe to assume if you're caught publicly trashing your employer, you'll need to be finding a new job, whether you had previously signed a waiver or not. log-in info is really taking it too far though. don't you read hipforums? everyone knows that it is physically impossible to have a facebook account and not post every single detail of your personal life on there.
The trash talking part isn't a big deal. If I'm unhappy with a job I'm not going to work there anymore....so if I'm trash talking I'm also quitting anyway. But as far as anything else I do in my personal time, it's no ones business but my own. My sister owns her own company, and I believe she has something in her contract about each employee being a representative of the company, and if any employee represents her company in an inappropriate way it is grounds for dismissal. I don't see anything wrong with that.
Does your sister demand all employees online profile information so she can hover over them? That's what this is really about. No one here expects to act like an ass and keep their job.
