I don't think I would say that one was better than the other, Monterey was really a testing ground for that kind of event and once they realised how well it worked, it was re-created by other people else where and on a bigger scale.

Monterey seemed much more self contained than Woodstock, which spread out all over the region, closing down the state through way and causing chaos.

Like Bill Graham says in the Woodstock move "There has to be away to stop the influx of humanity", unfortunately they did'nt have much of a back up plan to cover that eventuality, apart from just to let everyone in who could get there.

I think the performances were excellent at both events.

Woodstock by far beat out Monteray.. Monteray was advertised and planed out.. Just a concert.. Woodstock was A Movement.. an underground movement..it was word of mouth and it caught like wildfire..it drew ppl from all over the country.. it was our last stand against the man.. the man verses the ppl.. the ppl won that round. It was a statement that we all made together..saying here we are.. here's our music.. Dig It!!

It was the first of it's kind and the last.. many a time have they tried to "re-do" Woodstock.. it cannot be done... not today anyway.. the spirit is not there.. there are not enough of us left to bring it back..the young ppl just don't get it.. we try to explain it, we try to show it.. but the young ppl curse us and jeer at us.. telling us to 'fuck off' and leave them alone.. when we try to enlighten the younguns they do not want to really know the truth.. they want to make up some babyish fairy tale and demean Woodstocks message.. Demean what we brought to show them.. they don't want it.. It was never a game.. it was real and true.

When I was there at Yasgur's Farm I didn't see all these women with infants trecking to a three day event in an open field with no stores or way to get milk and diapers.. and to haul in three dozen diapers and a case of milk.. with no way to keep it cold.. what kind of mothers are they..

I must say.. if that is what the young ppl think Woodstock was.. then we failed.. we failed miserably.

    In Love n Light

It is a huge shame that 'the truth' did'nt perpetuate, there are too many other influences on young people and they often go in the direction of Hip Hop, and their goal in life is to own as much gold and as many expensive cars as they want. The message has been largely lost, that is for sure.

I guess you would not have seen mother's trying to find baby milk and disposable diapers because those things either did'nt exist (the diapers) or were'nt widely used (the milk). On other places on the net I have got on my soapbox , singing the praises of cloth diapering and breast feeding but alot of young people are'nt listening to that either, either that or the career minded women who really can't be bothered with all the 'fuss'.

I don't think I'd really know fully where the best performances were as I wasn't there at the time. Like you said, Jimi Hendrix burning his guitar must have been amazing to watch at Monteray. Correct me if I'm wrong here: I heard that he used to burn it because of sacrifice. It was about sacrificing the things you love and he loved his guitar. Then again I have watched the Woodstock video of him performing voo doo child and the sight of him playing the guitar with his teeth was equally amazing.
But as most people will react to this post, I wasn't there so basically I can never understand those festivals fully. [IMG] Not being able to is something I've always hated about myself.

All I know is that is the way rock music should be, out in the open with nature. That way the world can share in it.

Peace and love your way sister.

It was ritual.. it was the giving of ones self.. the sharing of ONE MIND.. the unity and brotherhood.. the love that we held for our fellow man.. The message was always in the music.. it told of all the wonderous things that we are.. we are stardust we are golden.... it was never about meterial gain or fame.. it was Being Human with other real Humans.. not plastic faces and plastic minds.. it was about nature and where we fit in.. it was about caring.. real truths of exsistance. Find Spirit Self/Higher Self and tuning into our Source.

WE are who we are.. we can be no other.

    Bright Blessings

I think I prefer Monterey because things were still new back in 67... I have the feeling things started to degenerate soon after. More drugs, less ideals. But Woodstock is legend, of course.

The thing is this ya'll, Monterey set the stage for Woodstock. You got to know Mother Shameless, that even though Monterey had some planning, it became a heavy thing in and of its own experience. Monterey was a small private thing, alot like the early Haight you and I were running around in. Monterey was the first Hippie psychedelic festival, and some of the stars were better than at woodstock.
But Woodstock was a sharing of consciousness, a sharing of brotherhood, that wasn't as expansive yet as of Monterey. But Monterey is where that expansion began.

In accordance with what had been growing in the Haight, there were some very strong eastern spiritual overtones at Monterey. The acid there was abundant, with a tremendous amount of dosing. All of this really went in store with the two hour jam by Ravi Shankar. I was not there, but I talked to many personal friends that were, right after the festival. The higher consciousness effect of the thing was evident, just as alot of the other Haight stuff going on, but had been kind of waning by then.
I was not at Woodstock either, although I was prepared to go. Hurricane Camille was due to hit land right where I lived, and I decided to stay close. So I got info on Woodstock fromm the few I knew who went and got there in time for the festival.
Technically, you really can't compare the two, but there were some great similarities.
First of all, the freaks and the man jived well together. The cooperative comradarie between the hippies and any outside assitince groups such as doctors or whoever went well, a real spiritual connection.
But the drugs at Woodstock sometimes left alot to be desired, and it was exhausting to get there and stay there. Monterey was alot easier on you, the acid better and easier to do and tolerate without the stresses of just surviving, so the LSD part of the two events definitely went to Monterey. But the brotherhood part more or less went to Woodstock, simply because of the mass of the humanity, and the love that came from everyone just being there.
Monterey set the stage for Woodstock, musically as well as spiritually. They were both essential events for the final flowering of the psychedelic hippie culture. Namaste
P.S. Grace Slick said in a qoute that Monterey was Her favorite, because it had so much more of a family feel. I was recently at the fortieth anniversary of Monterey, and brought home some written material with this statement, but I can't find it at this moment. When I do, I will post Her exact comment.

Here is Grace Slick's exact comment, out of a book called "It Happened At Monterey", by Elaine Mays. It says, "My idea of a good festival, the best festival of all time, was Monterey. They had these little booths where you could actually walk up if you wanted to buy something, with artists stuff on display. You could get food, you could go to the bathroom. People could see things. It wasn't too big. If you wanted to go home, you could get in your car and drive there." Now, she does not mention Woodstock, but she was at both events.
Look ya'll, both of these festivals had their place and were fantastic. The question now is, where are our heads at because of these consciousness raising events? Do we just have memories, or are we ready to face the world that is still fucked up because original hippie stalled in its tracks?
It is time for the next step. Peace, Love, Flowers, Yogin Bhairava Atmabhoda Sarasvati
