I wouldn't really call this an epidemic or a serious problem, but for some reason in this present age everyone and their mother are striving to become musicians!O.O Why? You know the world has way to many noisemakers when they came up with a little show called "American Idol"(an American television show where singers audition and are chosen to be the nation's newest "idol" by process of elimination(a large craze for a huge fan base of idiots, in my opinion)). Its gotten to the point that theres a new "hit" every week. And by "Hit" i mean even unique styles are becoming generic crap from how often they are repeated. Take one random and semi-recent song/entire album and i guarantee there are five others that are either just like it or sound as if their by the same artist. If you take up music because you want attention, or prestige, or money, or because you think that somebody will like you better if you can strum a few chords on a guitar, give it up and find something that you actually think you like for yourself. For those of you who actually have talent in music, and enjoy making it for all the right reasons, none of this is directed towards you.
I only watch American Idol during their early audition process so I can laugh at all the wannabes who are 100% convinced they're God's gift to the music industry.
A musician is someone who can play air guitar to the same songs every day, or what ever instrument you play. Musicians have the passion, not just some lame blind willpower to succeed and be known, and think they are doing something good. I would call a musician someone who has mastered their art, and that would make very few of us a true musician.... but fuck it, its the only art i really practise so why not.
If music is similar it's because people think alike. Even if it's just a copy, there are millions of songs to copy, but everyone can have their own favorite. Music isn't about talent. It's about expression. Sometimes a person who is tonedeaf or even completely deaf can blow your mind with what they create if they put all their heart into it. Look around... and you probably just have a case of just listening to too much bad music... especially if you've been paying so much attention to commercial music.
Also, musicians are influenced by other musicians. We don't deliberately copy another artist's song. We can't help it. THe only way for a musician to not be influenced is to live in a soundproof bubble away from any I-pod, radio or even televison.
I would call myself a musician. I'm not very good at the guitar, but I try, and write a couple of songs which I hope someday I'll be able to put music too. I don't want to to be famous, just to express myself and to let my feelings be heard.
I'm a musician because I make music. Really, it's the only thing clear to me in life...doesn't mean I have any talent though. :nopity: Also, I like American Idol. Sure, it's just trash TV, but what's so wrong with that?
i practice my basson on average four hours a day. and spend all my leftover energy making more reeds. and there's nothing else id rather do.
I totally agree with what you said Many people only play for attention and end up stopping playing when they realise that learning to play an instrument well isn't a walk in the park.
I hear ya on that. I HATE generic crap being produced too. I would recommend getting away from the tv and radio for a while and searching out some great music. It's out there and with the advent of the interweb, it's easy to find. Am I a musician? Well, I can plunk out some songs on my guitars and I have played in public a few times. Being a musician is somthing that comes from the heart, not the fingertips. Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Bruce Sprinsteen, Jimi Hendrix? None of them could really sing well; they had soul and soul, my friend, is what makes a musician.
...or by music editorships. I don´t like generic crap too, but I have an opinion that sometimes the crap makes your feelings from good music much more high-powered. Of course, when it´s too much crap, it´s too bad, but sometimes it increases the worth of great music. It´s like playing the instrument....if you don´t use high strains every time and than you use it in right moment, it´s more emotional experience, I mean, for everybody.
why do polls never seem to have options that entirely fit? i can read sheet music. have played several instruments. (quite well in the oppinions of others who have heard me do so and weren't and had nothing to gain by flattering me. i must point out however this was ages ago, and haven't had a real instrument of any kind to practice on for a long time since either. so there's no way i could possibly still be worth a dam at it. but almost certainly could be again, given an instrument i know how to play and sufficient time, reference and practice materials) have a tin ear. have never performed professionally. so what is or is not 'being a musician'? whatever it is, at this point in time and my life, i don't think i could very well call myself one. nor is it my number one goal in what remains of my life. nor can i say it ever has been. but it could have been a good way for me to have made an honest living, if my life had worked out that way. improbable though not impossible that it still could. the poll seems to imply everyone either wants to be a musician or believes they have no capacity to do so. like i said, why do polls so often have no options that logically apply to myself? =^^= .../\...
Well, there's got to be a most popular something and music seems to be it. I'm happier knowing that millions of people are wannabe rock stars than I would be if they were just sitting around doing nothing. Goal oriented activities are essential to happiness, and creative outlets are good for you. With that said I think it'd be cool if there were a seperate musician's forum, because there are so many of them and they sort of overwhelm the other types of performers in this one. Like the "Subforum" setup that the some of the other ones have...eh but this one is so dead maybe just "Musicians" and "Other" would be our only sub forums.
Well I sing 2-3 hours a day of classical music and I'm trying to get into an university for classical music next year.. so even though I'm still learning I do consider myself a musician and my goal so far is to become an opera singer.
This is one of the best thing that was ever said concerning Music. I applaud this sentence and will glorify it for the rest of my days.
The competition is fierce, guitar players are a dime a dozen, and the music industry doesn't want new or innovative music, they only want what is current, and what makes them money.Underground music was created for a reason. To circumvent the Dicksmacks in the industry.Go underground. Music may belong to everyone, but right now it belongs to Hollywood.
