This is why fuel prices will never change. These lines at this 1 station have been like this solid for over 4 hours. This station has 6 pump lanes with 2 pumps per row so a steady stream of 12 cars fueling at a time and the lines are in the streets. The time is currentl 5:45pm in London Ontario Canada. They are supposed to protest fuel and not buy any on Sunday. Do you think the oil companies will feel any loss on Sunday or did Saturday more than make up for it? The come Monday what will the lines be like again? All they are doing is atually buying more fuel than likely they would have the day before the boycott.

There is so many cars buying fuel that the road is blocked so trucks can not get to thier pumps.

Good point. It would have been better if people just stayed at home for a few days. Or protest in the streets (which is what will start happening soon) ((probably:)))

Boycotts will work if you do it right.
Here is what you can do:

The only way to reduce gas prices is to reduce global demand for oil.
Strategies like not buying on weekends/at certain stores don't work because you are doing nothing to lower demand, or raise supply (economics 101).

On a personal level the best way to do this is to curb your own usage, only drive to work/stores don't go on high rides, don't waste your gas. Buy a motorcyle if you don't need a big car and live in an area where one is viable. Make sure that your tires have a goodly amount of pressure, that your filters are clear, and that your oil is changed regularly.

Some local action that might help would be to arrange carpools at your work/school, petition your local government for subsidies on public transportation or HOV lanes/users, the building of bicyle lanes, or subsidies for motorcyles.

on a state/national level you could try to lobby for subsidies on hybrid cars, ethanol production, cars that can run on natural gas, gasoline or ethanol at the same time (Brazil did this in the seventies, and most cars down there have two or three tanks, which with the flip of a switch can transfer to a different type of fuel). You could lobby for fuel efficiency standards on all new cars.

I completely disagree. The current oil prices have nothing to do with supply and demand and everything to do with gouging the American consumer.

    Actual facts:

We have a surplus of oil reserves. In fact because of the mild winter we have more that what was expected. Yet gas prices continued to rise during the winter.

Last month gas consumption was down yet prices continue to rise.

The price per barrel of oil does not justify these high prices. It would take oil prices of well over $100.00 dollars per barrel to justify these high prices.

As many oil companies merged they shut down refineries to artificially restrict supply and drive up oil prices.

Absolutely good suggestions. However, they are not viable options for most people.

I completely agree with you here. We should lobby for these changes even if prices come down. We all know and agree that petrol fuel is not good for the environment. I could go on and on about this but I doubt it is necessary as most people on this forum have the same opinion.

BTW- I think I remember reading somewhere that all gas cars can be converted to run on 100% Ethanol for just $2,000. Moreover, most new cars are already capable of running on alterative fuels. So where are the ethanol stations?

I saw some guy on the news say that if we raised fuel efficiency standards by just 10 miles per gallon (which can be easily done) we would be completely free of imported oil in just 7 years. If we were more aggressive than that just think about what we could achieve in just 2 or 3 years.

But for the moment we have to deal with the immediate problem of $3.00 plus per gallon for gas. Again there is no justification for this. It is straight out gouging and it is going to hut a lot of people, mostly the poor.

    Boycott Exxon/Mobil and Hess stations.

recently in my area prices rose above $3.00 which is bad for rural NC, and continued to rise. people here were very angry. then for no reason a hess station was made(took over a family owned business) and started to gouge the prices, which in turn made other prices higher. late one night (since the store is a 12 hour store that opens at 8) a man from the county walked in, went to the bathroom. when he went to the bathroom he got all the rolls of toilet paper, put them together and lit a match which he put perpendicular with the match book. he walked out of the store, and it burned down right after the store closed. I dont condone these actions but it says something. if gas prices arent lowered the people will revolt and people will die. and noone wants a war with the government(at least not a physical one)

The retirement compensation package given by Exxon Mobil Corp. to outgoing Chairman Lee Raymond is said to total $400 million when all pension payoffs and stock options are included.

Well I don't know about you guys, but its nice to see so many damn people concerned about all this.

A group over at http://www.nextgasstrike.com is going to be hosting and counting down the next gas strikes. It's pretty cool stuff really.

Let's all participate and make it happen.

Gas prices don't change because gas is a private commodity, not a public commodity.

It's nice to see that people's primary concern is how gas affects their pockets and not how it affects their environment. We deserve everything we get. I hope oil goes to $100 a gallon.

    All the more reason to:

    boycott Exxon/Mobil

Actually that would not effect gas prices at all. Gas prices are not skyrocketing due to supply and demand. Our problem is the greed and price gouging by the oil companies. Believe it or not there is actually a surplus of oil!

Besides even if more drilling would help, all that would do is continue our dependence on fossil fuels and cause more damage to the earth. There are plenty of viable alternatives like bio diesel and ethanol. Brazil did it why can’t we?

Well that is good and of course I will participate, but we need an on ongoing protest which is why I will not buy gas from Exxon/Mobil or Hess gas stations at all until gas prices drop dramatically.

Oil companys only average about 7% profit, which still nets about 30billion a year, which is why they can do the $400 mill retirement packages. Government taxes equate to about $.50 a gallon, depending on your locale. If we do start drilling our own oil, like in alaska, we won't necessarily benefit from that. All crude goes onto the open market. So, the mid eastern oil companys can by our crude, refine it, and sell it back to us at the current prices. To lower gas prices, we need to lower refinery standards, and lower taxes.

Stop buying what the “spin doctors” are telling you and look up your own facts. The oil companies make far more than that in profits. It only costs the oil companies $4.00 per barrel to get the gas from the ground to your local gestation!

The oil companies want you to think that until now they were so poor and could barely turn a profit. That is complete BS.

Look, I am not against the oil companies making a profit, I am against the gouging that is going on.

Boycott Exxon/Mobil and Hess gas stations.

I was watching that movie Mad Max, you know that movie where gas is so precious that people are killing each other for a few gallons. It was set in the future -- I believe it was August." --Jay Leno

"To counteract all the bad publicity they've been getting, the oil companies plan to introduce full-page ads explaining where your gas dollar goes. Before you explain that, explain where you get gas for a dollar. There's no such thing as a gas dollar. It's your gas five dollar." --Jay Leno

"Gas is so expensive SUV now stands for sport utility victim." --Jay Leno

"President Bush announced his new fitness plan to get people walking again. It's called, 'Gasoline at $3 a gallon.' ... Given how expensive gas is, today, I saw a van with 50 legal Americans inside it." --Jay Leno

"President Bush said I wish I could wave a magic wand and lower gas prices. And then he said I wish I could wave a magic wand and bring the troops home. And he said I wish I could wave a magic wand and fix health care. And I was thinking this guy waves his wand more than Clinton." --David Letterman

"The average price of gas is now $2.11 a gallon, and here in California, it’s $2.30 a gallon. Here in L.A., it is literally cheaper to buy a new car than to fill your gas tank. Literally. Oprah tried to give away a car to someone in her studio audience today, and the woman spit in her face." --Jimmy Kimmel

"Here in California gas prices have gone up to more than $2 a gallon. So not only didn’t we find any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq…apparently we didn't find any oil there either. Didn't we win the war? I thought that gas would be free now." —Jay Leno

"President Bush signed a big $286 billion highway bill yesterday. The sad part, $285 billion of it is for gas money." --Jay Leno

"Gas prices at an all-time high here in California. Like, $3.30, in Malibu. Gas is so expensive, women in Beverly Hills now can't afford to run over their cheating husbands with their Mercedes anymore." --Jay Leno "The nation's second-largest oil company, Chevron Texaco, announced it was buying rival Unocal Corp. A spokesman for Chevron Texaco, which made a $13 billion profit last year, says the new company will be called 'Bend Over, America.'" --Dennis Miller
